my uncle works at warp and he said i care because you two, ventwolin and hangable autwo bulb are all coming out next year for their 30th anniversaries, each one encased in a premium maple box sourced from richard's NFTrees.

the bonus track is the sound of a busted up quadraverb falling down the stairs, recorded straight to nagra and reversed. it's fucking rad.

Come on, all these new things are lazy af. There's so much music coming out, so much decent stuff - and he just releases half assed drum track versions and other empty things? To a release that wasn't even his best to begin with?

I agree but he don't have to prove himself or give out anything really

Love me some Aphex Twin.. Collapse EP and some of the Soundcloud dumps is ace but wish he could give out something more meaty again.

blackbox release got all people hyping and shit but everything went to "meh" pretty fast. And all these versions just puts me more off sadly

I'm with you. I loved Collapse. I think Blackbox is nice, but feels a bit skimpy, especially as you said with all these versions. It's true has nothing to prove, but if I was a musician with the ears of the world with an allegedly huge back catalog I'd want to occasionally drop more than a few bones lol.

I disagree that he has nothing to prove. I'd like to see him prove he's not an overhyped has-been who has essentially just become a brand name for merch.

two thoughts:

- It'd be nice if he said something about what to expect in the future

- a "chosen boards" for Ae's new live releases, it'd be nice to hear some of it in a triple disc album format, the no new albums quote is a bit distressing personally

Yeah, I mean I'm not sure I should be posting here, because I do find him overhyped (it's an overused word sometimes but does apply in this case imo.) I guess I'm here because the mindblowing stuff he's done is really mindblowing, but there's a feeling - very much increasingly so as time and a drip-drab of "ok" tracks roll in - that there's now a severe mismatch between his fame and quality.

I need to listen to Drukqs and The Tuss again. 🙏

I think Blackbox Recorder was more about the video/artwork and the collab with Weirdcore than a major music release which is why it appears a little disappointing. Warp tried to turn it into some kind of major EP and it came up short. And adding little bits here and there isn't doing it any favours.

The dentist drums are gonna shatter teeth and each ploink will melt one of your balls

Yes totally!

About that he has nothing to prove.. I was just thinking like artists like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher etc has given us so much music for us to spend hours of hours listening. Really like 2 decades of electronic music.

They are getting into the older years now and I think it is time for them to step aside little bit but Warp records is what it is.

The thing is

1. Blackbox was a very short EP with not much going on (feels like a teaser for something bigger)
2. He have played so much crazy good unreleased music live

So ofc this higher the expectations for him to do something bigger.

imo richard has always had a certain apathy about releasing music. i've felt that "i care bc you do" was another way of saying "i don't really care." 26 remixes were "for cash." drukqs was again a cash grab so he could make money before anyone else after he left his hard drive on a plane. every now and again he seems to get serious about an album. analord seemed like a really honed in project and releasing it as a series of 12" was cool. seemed like he had fun with that one. syro felt like he was finally sharing important tunes again, really giving us a fine-tuned classic style LP of tunes. he also released the best ever interview along with syro where he actually seemed really open and candid and even shared studio pics and shit. syro felt like richard was being real af. the soundcloud dump is somewhere in between, it's just a "dump" of music online but it was an event that felt like he was really hanging out with fans almost in real time, sharing stuff from his archive. so idk, i feel like he's never had one way of doing things and there's been such a consistent tendency to just be like yeah whatever when it comes to releasing tunes. one era will be a beautifully crafted series of 10 eps of some of his best ever music, another era will just be random 12"s with just a few tunes, nothing mind blowing.

i have no insight into why he releases what he does. but it does feel like releasing music is not very important to him, or at least he doesn't always take it seriously. taken as a whole tho, his ouevre is one of the all time best in electronic music history so i'm not complaining.

Well, the other day I was just reading a 1998 interview with him where he says..

  Quote

Sweater: Okay. So Richard [James], you're recording now, right?
RDJ: Yeah, I'm in the studio messing about. I'm gonna release two more albums and that will be that.

Sweater: What do you mean?
RDJ: No more releases.

Sweater: You're retiring?
RDJ: [Laughing] Hardly. I'm just over the whole music business aspect of it. I've made more than enough money. I really enjoyed all of it; meeting so many industry pricks and winding them up has been immensely entertaining, but its gotten old.

I know you need to take anything he says with a massive amount of salt, the usual taking the piss and whatever he was thinking 26 years ago surely has changed, but is this perhaps referring to some contractual obligation to Warp? Two albums after 1998 would be Drukqs and Syro.
