yea didn't mean to step on anyone's cables. I know there are still a few things planned. And I'm more then hardly satisfied about the last year's activities. But after  last servel days, digging through the recent ae_live stuff had a boomer and was leeching for the future. Maybe a little too enthusiastic.

As Berlin born, can understand the disgust for the city, ol good no need for Berlin gig

Have tickets for Manchester. Will be my 21st time seeing them live. (not including DJ sets....I once saw Ae DJ at The Grapes, Trippet Lane, in Sheffield, Halloween, 1999. There were 8 people there in the tiny front room of the pub!)

That'll be an awesome first show. And the tickets went QUICK. I hope they go hard for a sort of "homecoming" show

21 times is pretty impressive. Manchester will be no. 8 for me, clearly a lightweight. Which have been your favourite gigs?

Kelham Island, Sheffield (1996?), Warp Lighthouse Party, 2000 (stood behind a bloke and his kid for the set....kid turned round....it was Bjork), Love Bytes Festival, Sheffield,  2001, Music Box,Manchester, 2001, Various Festival, Newcastle, 2005 (they played in the bowels of a fishing boat, following Pan Sonic no less!), but the Barbican gigs 2021 were the best by far.

I was lucky to grow up in Sheffield, so got to see Ae and Squarepusher quite a bit in the late 90s. as they all lived there at the time. Saw them DJ loads (Notable was Sean DJing at a Pole gig at The Boardwalk). Best thing is....I still feel the same excitement going to see them play, shit never gets old, as you have no idea what you're in for. You just know it's gonna be next-level, blow- your-mind-shit.

I was at the Warp lighthouse party, remember seeing Bjork bouncing around too. The autechre set wasn't great though I thought? As I remember they were on fairly late, energy was ebbing and a 10 minute version of a then-unreleased 19 headaches didn't really hit the spot.

2005 Untitled tour at SE1 was definitely peak AE for me. 2010 Oversteps tour and 2016 Grafenhainichen were pretty close. 2001 confield tour at Brixton Fridge was interesting but kinda ran out of steam halfway through.

Funnily enough didn't enjoy the London A set at Barbican, surprised you rate that one top. The sound was godawful where we were sitting which didn't help.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Manchester, latest sets sound fucking tight so anything from those and I'm happy.

Funny how we view things diffrently. I loved the Ae set at The Lighthouse Party. Though my main memory of that night was the fear of hypothermia from the freezing temperature all night (Oh and actually seeing BOC live too. Only time I ever got the chance).

I saw them do the 2005 set 5 times. Manchester, then Nottingham the following night. (SND were superb too!). Then they did the set when I saw them on the fishing boat, and cant remember the year but The Warehouse project at there Boddingtons Brewery in Manchester, and a gig at Coco (Koko?) London with Hecker and Lee Dorian(!) as opening DJ (There were others but cannot remember who else played that night).

I agree with you about the sound at the Barbican. For the first set we were front left, and the sound was too bassy, but for the first time I have seen them, it was totally cant-see-your-hand-in-front of your face dark, and at times it was honestly a little scary all those huge sounds assaulting me in the dark. For the second set we were up on the balcony and the sound was totally different.

I think also that it who I was with, and who we stayed with etc that make gigs memorable. Manchester gigs were always special as I had a lot of mates there who moved there from Sheffield I'd moved down to Brighton, so hooking up with folks was always special and generally made it a few days of getting fucked up, record shopping and always a party etc. Happy memories. Now im out in the middle of nowhere with no real mates, and the rest of my mates are scattered around all over the place, so Ae gigs are always going to be a big social thing.

Sean and Rob, if you read this: Thanks for all the great times. It's not just your music, but quite a few of my friendships are through a love of your music, and lots of great times have been had because of you guys. Your music has been a huge part of my life for 30 years (!), and it's got me through the best and worst of times. Cheers boys.

The gig at Koko was called Easy To Swallow, curated by Russ Haswell. Pita, Earth and Robert Hood played. Im pretty sure Hecker played too, but my memory isnt what it was!

We were front right at the Barbican - at the volume they were playing all you could make out was a load of bassy thwacks.

Only darker gig was SE1, they really went all in on the lights out concept.  Totally disorientating.  The guy I was with (not a huge autechre fan) compared it to having 90 minutes of 'enhanced interrogation' at Abu Graib - I couldn't really disagree but it was awesome.

I'm usually dragging 'autechre-curious' mates along, with mixed results - there's a couple still pissed at me for the Barbican gig.  One lasting regret was not dragging them along to an Aldwych gig in the late 90s with a then-unknown Boards of Canada - we were out just round the corner too.

I was at the Version festival in Newcastle. Managed to drag my girlfriend there, forgot to mention that we would be spending most of the time on a boat listening to electronic acts.

My abiding memories are flying up to Newcastle from Gatwick the same day as the London bombings. Never seen so many armed police.  And the security pushing a Geordie off the mooring rope with a broom, who was trying to climb up after being refused entry. It was a great weekend: https://forma.org.uk/projects/version

Yep it was a blast and I have only got fond memories of it. I recall Autechre starting off their set with a technical issue, it was really quiet then they figured it out and pumped up the bass. Monolake were great, as were Scion. I even bumped into a couple of Watmmers there. I also remember that my girlfriend, now my wife, could not comprehend why anyone would want to listen to Fennesz after his set.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yup, totally agree! Nothing against Russ....but dunno. Too many times now, and it doesnt get me in the mood for Ae. Though Rob Hall or Andy Maddocks would be sweet.

They will be playing at Flow Festival in Helsinki next summer.

Oh god no.. I had to already once buy a ticket to Flow to see Aphex. I don't want to go there again. I have zero interest to see anything else in that lineup.
