RIP to WATMM Discussion thread

Life-changing indeed.

I discovered Autechre and the whole Warp/Skam/etc scene in 2003, some time after Draft got released. It changed my notion of music, of sound even. I had known about Aphex before that, but only by the videos on MTV. I don't remember when I became aware of WATMM, but it could have been around 2006. Lurking only, because I couldn't create an account back then (when the logo was the crop circle thingy). That came in 2011. To be able to actively discuss and talk about this kind of music that nobody in my vicinity really liked was fantastic. Other online places existed of course, but the quality of the discussions held here was very high. It probably even enhanced my experience of the music itself. I'm glad this is carried over to Keyosc. But it started here (for me at least), so this place will always stay with me. Good, fond memories.

So, thank you @Joyrex for running this place for so long. It will be missed... All the best to you!

Thank you @Joyrex for making this community! Been a long time lurker, since about 2003ish. It has been become a comforting habit to come here and check out discussion on artists, get recommendations for music, films etc. and see funny/bizarre content. I’ll miss this place.

Will there at least be a final push for archiving? I'd hate for all of this to just vanish.

I see that ArchiveTeam has the site listed on their deathwatch page but it doesn't seem like a formal archive project has been started. Anyone know how to wrangle AT together to get a "warrior" project started there?

Their info is already wrong: Joyrex has already mentioned in this very thread 1 page back that it's closing down at the end of this month.

Sent out a brief press release to Warp, Bleep, Quietus, and Synthopia regarding the impending shutdown, and Joyrex’s decades of selfless effort. No response yet, but mebbe.  

I hope this is played as the life support is switched off.

Haven't been posting here for a while, but I saw the news when it broke. This place was still of the old internet, before everything was about 'likes', and when you were a freak if you put your real name on the net. I was here in the 2000s but I was a belligerent stoner back then. Can't even remember my name from back then and it seemed pointless to revive that account when I started coming back here.

I was always amazed that watmm still existed. I don't have a lot of time to be on forums any more, but I still prefer them 100% over social media. I always liked the discussions in New + Upcoming Releases, and the anal wank that makes a place like this so glorious. That said, I have noticed that the old internet has returned: New forums are springing up, people in their 20s are getting tired and leaving social media. People are making websites again. I am meeting a lot of Gen Z irl and many are opting out and bringing back the magic of the internet from the pre-iphone days. It will always be a minority thing, but that's exactly what the old internet was: Small enough to be a subculture in itself. looking forward to keyosc!

Visiting WATMM feels like visiting my dying grandpa everyday knowing that the end is near

James, thanks for everything! WATMM was a huge part of my life for many years. In college, and then when I started living on my own, it was so good to have a community of people to talk with. This place made me laugh and feel less alone. Posting tracks in EKT and getting feedback from people I respected was amazing, and it inspired me to keep going with my music.

I'll never forget how cool it was to get a physical copy of WATMM v1 with my track on it!

WATMM was really one of the best things on the internet for decades, and for a few years, may have actually been the center of the universe. I was always amused how often it turned up when googling random stuff...

I'll miss it.
