I played 54 Cymru Beats

Recommended Posts

I think the reason Aphex doesn't appeal to a lot of people is because his stuff sounds different than what the majority of people are used to. Take Mt Saint Michel Mix as an example. It's an amazing song, I doubt anyone can argue that. But most people would be put off by the fact that it's so rapid (even when played at 33rpm) and that it's so complex. I can't really describe it, since I have no experience in music theory or anything, but it's just a totally different format. It's not just Vocals+Bass+Drum Beat+SynthLoop, which is the predominant structure of so many pop songs today.

I don't think that there's such a thing as "intelligent" music, but there is definitely music that is much more complex and much deeper than other music. You usually have to trade off the music's catchiness in order to create that though. At first glance, Mt Saint Michel Mix seems so convoluted and just overdone. Same with most of the music on Drukqs. After a few listens, you start to really hear the entire song for what it is and the initial shock of "oh god what is this in my ears" is gone. Then you can start to appreciate.

Although that does take a while and you really have to like music in order to listen to some of this stuff. I'm not talking like a passive interest and listening to music to stay with the flow of pop culture. I'm saying that people who genuinely love music, they'll be the ones that can appreciate Aphex and other similar artists the most.

What I'm trying to say is that Aphex isn't for everyone and a lot of people just can't look past the fact that some music sounds so different. They completely disregard any form of music that isn't familiar to them. Which is a shame, because there really is so much good music out there that doesn't adhere to this pop format we've created.

Aphex and Autechre did not come up with the phrase electronic music, it was just their fans all them years back.

In fact Aphex thinks the phrase is stupid (http://www.furious.com/perfect/aphextwin.html) if we call Aphex and another small group of Electronic artists Intelligent we are automatically saying everyone else is stupid, don't call Aphex intelligent.

Btw I was being sarcastic. Of course electronic music is a ridiculous name.

The 1st time I heard Aphex, it was Come To Daddy. I had my friend listen to it over the phone. He didn't like it and now he never will listen to any Aphex.

Fuck. :turned:

Most people listen to music because they like it, it appeals to them, is catchy etc, not because it has musical innovation. I bet you're not completely into atonal music, which one could argue is more intelligent than aphex stuff. Drukqs isn't the fucking pinnacle of music, it's not more intelligent than any good music out there.

To myself? No I agree, Drukqs is most certainly not the pinnacle of music.

You totally have no shame for sharing your unusual music tastes, assy!

The only similar experience that happened to me is when I was at a party with a couple of chicks. They were dancing to fucking reggaeton and I put out "Aanguish" by Venetian Snares. It was a nice one!

Perfect! Tell me more, how did they react?

I always choose 4 to start off and then if they like that I go with Girl-boy song. And then they are hooked. Basically mst of the stuff off of the RDJ album. Also sometimes, people who are new to Aphex(in my experience) seem to have a hard time understanding the same guy who did Druqks also did SAW. Some won't even except it.

big surprise.

total electronic music n00bster doesn't 'get' 54 cymru beats.

learning curve dude.

i bet when you were listening to mid nineties metal, you wouldn't have got it either.

i fucking hate musical snobbery... rmemember, it's a learning curve that brought you to drukqs, so don't expect the uninitiated to be anything but discombobulated by shit like that.

elitism stinks of insecurity.

wow, correct! I like chucking people in the deep end.. none of this "oh I will play Fingerbib to them first, then Girl/Boy".. at the time I was listening to Drukqs, he wanted to listen in, and I gladly let him. I wasn't thinking to myself "oh shit, he's not going to get this".

what learning curve are you talking about? Drukqs was the first Aphex album I bought, I was hooked after that.

They stopped dancing and asked "What's that music?". They didn't react as furiously as I was expecting.

Maybe Ventolin would have made your evening.

Oh, how sweet that must be.

I only go out of my way to expose people to real music when those people have proven themselves to be worthy or able to digest it. "That is not music" is an interesting response because it really says a lot about how a civilization has defined the word music in its languages. Moreover, "music" is commonly understood through relation to I IV V progressions and straight 4/4 beats with little to no divergence. Aural consumption of these common themes leads to common feelings and emotions, and if the listener is not put in this all too common aural state, then the listener will describe these vibes as "non-music."

...break.

woofer is completely correct, and i am not arguing with him/her/it here. however, i feel compelled to drop a related little notion of mine - there's still fun to be had with I IV V. if anything, i have a really keen sense of "balance" that pervades just about anything i do - music, writing, drawing, dancing, etc.

I IV V is just very balanced. i've written pieces that are just... a simple, balanced progression like that, and the interesting part is really in the timing and layering of multiple instances of it. the result is you get something that's constantly moving, yet completely still. balanced.

Guest hahathhat

does sort of look that way, right? that was my initial take, too - something organic and gross. i saw it via google image search or something, said to myself... what on EARTH is that??? and found it was something i did not expect it to be at all.

so i saved the image... then i forgot what the hell it was. i think it was edible.
