No problem...

These two recordings are pretty similar and kinda disturbing, but they are the only two I specifically remember having the mic gain up pretty damn high with all the fans and shit turned off in the room. and both normally really quiet sounds.

Me scratching strings on a grand piano slowly.

Me scratching strings on a guitar slowly. You can actually hear my friend in the very beginning of the recording about 10 feet away saying "pst pst" trying to get my attention to use a guitar pic instead of my nails, which shows how loud this thing gets.

For the sake of reference, here is a recording of me hanging an AT-822 above the ground while someone scrapes a shovel into some rocks all recorded on the H2 (listen with headphones). I honestly think the built in mics have more expression for the price.

Anyways, I hope it helps your decision!

Cheers man, that's much appreciated. So it seems like there's quite a bit of hiss in the first two clips though as you say the gain is whacked right up so that would explain that. Is the third clip recorded in either the low or medium gain as I can't hear any noise on that recording at all.

I reckon I'm gonna probably get one of these things anyway...

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

The first two clips I sent you of the piano and people singing were the built in mic at medium gain, thats were i normally keep it. The two scratching samples were the built in mic with hi gain, and that last one of the shovel was with an external mic plugged in at mid gain.

I'm sure you have read about it already, but incase you have not, once you arm the h2 for recording, you can adjust the gain within the low/medium/high setting by pressing fast forward or rewind, so you can visually arm the recording (so even if its set at mid, you can adjust between 0-127 within mid, if its not loud enough at max, you can switch to Hi then slide the gain down). So its not like you have 3 absolute settings of mic gain, within that you can do further adjusting.

The low gain setting is pretty low, and I have no doubt I could record a show and not worry about it clipping. I once used the lo gain and placed the recorder under my car (which is old and loud) to maybe get some bass from the idle engine sounds, and the results turned out barely audible, I could have gotten away with the medium setting turned down a bit.
