I started watching Season 1 and I'm about to finish it. So far, it's really good but a little overhyped if you ask me. It's still look like a 90s tv show and some of the acting is not very good (McNulty for instance). Compared to the shows we have nowadays, it looks a bit pale. Does it get any better with the following seasons or should I switch to the Boardwalk Empire ?

Yeah, loved that... Espacilly when he wanted to throw Michael Scott/Steve Carrell's out, because he wouldn't leave the office after he got fired.. Quite Stringer Bell'ish.

haven't finished boardwalk yet, but i dare to say that wire > boardwalk

i watched season 1 a couple of years ago, which i liked, but for some reason i only saw like 2 or 3 episodes of season 2 because it felt like a whole other show with the dock workers or whatever, don't really remember. im thinking im gonna give it another shot though.

it's just ..4:3 .. :(

yall serious? the wire is so monumentally good and important, it's insulting to both shows to compare it to a stale bit of fluff like Boardwalk Empire.

indeed. It's not as though it doesn't have its flaws, but it's better than any other tv show I've seen.

To be fair... Although I disagree (because I'm in love with The Wire) this is basically how I see The Sopranos. Just couldn't get into it, one and a half seasons I watched before giving up out of boredom.

me too, not necessarily because it was so great, but because it is an anomaly - the TV show that manages to stay uniformly strong through all seasons (fuck the season 5 haters). Personally, I don't think even the Sopranos managed that

I loved the Sopranos almost in spite of itself - I'm not typically into "wish fulfillment" entertainment, and I think the basic premise of the show after Season 1 is that Tony Soprano represents every male's idealized self-image, the guy who can fuck all the hot chicks and unleash his temper at whomever he wishes - but I thought that first 2 or 3 seasons were the best. The last 3 or so seasons sagged a bit imo. Didn't really connect with the Steve Buscemi character arc, the gay lover arc, or the filmmaking arc (not so interested in a weak critique of the way Hollywood works) and other plotlines. Still, another great show, almost as good as The Wire imo. It hit some higher highs than the Wire at moments, too. I thought the entire Pussy Moltesante (sp?) character arc - with the dream sequences - was some of the best TV I've ever seen.

Well acted ? Does that mean one changes his mind out of the blue ? Or that McNulty suddenly gets better ? I watched the first ep of season 2 and I still find the acting of McNulty quite bad. Otherwise the show is very good, despite its aethetics. I don't know, as of now, I still prefer Mad Men, Six Feet Under or Breaking Bad, but I'll make my judgment when I finish season 3. Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, Treme are on the waiting list.

i think mcnulty is acted flawlessly. is it maybe the character that gets on your nerve?

as for your list - i would *never* rate breaking bad better than wire, or put it in same category as mad men. have yet to see six feet under. boardwalk is good so far (seen 4 or 5 eps), deadwood is a category of its own, treme is quite good (but not wire good).

Finished the first season and half way through the second.. so damn good.. I have all 5 as well.. it is so realistic...

Epic series.

I think breaking bad is the best thing ever, nearly as good as the wire in terms of entertainment..but it broke my heart with a 8 month wait between seasons 3 and 4

were as i saw the entire wire series 1-5 in about 2 months. it was great and spontaneous.. which fuelled its greatness. i hope breaking bad can continue to be as good as it was before the season ended.

apparently BB costs around $1million an episode to make.. worth it though.. apart from the wait between seasons

i love mcnulty the character, but he does fudge the accent quite a few times..especially when hes supposed to be passionate or angry.
