Strangest AE beats/signatures that still work

Recommended Posts

You know maybe if someone slapped a really simple, 4 to the floor beat over the top of some Autechre, people would understand how they're in 4/4. Pen Expers is a good example, I remember someone saying it's in something like 13/8... What were they thinking?!? That track is totally just a 4/4 hip hop beat but messed up to oblivion.

As for Stud.... I love that song, but I don't see how the beat is hard to understand... it's kinda like a cheesy drum and bass beat (think Underworld's Scribble) but the sounds replaced with griding and squealing machines. Part of what I love about it is it's simplicity.. I don't feel perplexed by it, just hypnotised...

yeah, should start an 'understanding autechre' youtube channel, haha!

i remember reading a review of confield saying that parhelic triangle was in 7/8. probably one of the easiest post-lp5 autechre beats to understand imo!

Yeah exactly! Almost all of their stuff is in 4/4... in fact, off the top of my head, everything before Chiastic Slide is in 4/4, and on that the only tracks that aren't are Hub, Cichli and Pule.

LP5 has 777 and Caliper Remote and Melve, the last two are only interludes.

drane is in 10/4

perlence subrange is 7/4 or 7/8

chenc9 is 6/4 or 3/4

characi is 9/4

that's all i can think of atm. i seem to remember one of the 901s having screwy phrasing but they just jam out on that so it's surely not concrete

yeah not 7/8. its 4/4, if you want to specify the half time swing then we can call it 4/2.

SonDEremawe is arhythmic

I was always tripped out by the theory that "Fold 4, Wrap 5" was created by layering 2 4/4 beats at staggered meter to give the "illusion" of altered time sig. Anyway, I was compiling all the archive work that I've done and ran into an experiment where I did something...uh, similar but didn't realize the implications until now.

It's Dr. Dre - "Xplosive" and Aaliyah - "More Than A Woman" blended at a staggered meter. It was an accident using Goldwave's "stretch to fit" feature. I was trying to do something much less inspired back in 2002 for less demanding folks than WATMM. It approaches something like a messy 6/8 and isn't anything as good as Autechre lol

yeah that actually works man

that song doesn't even have a time signature per say, its a weird beat yes but it doesnt 'work' as i was discussing above

if you wouldn't mind the challenge, you could waltz to it

Interesting.... I hear the first "bass drum" as the one, then there's a 7/8 bar until the next BD, which is the one to a 6/8 bar. Then, repeat.

I wonder how you count it? I'd love to feel like I feel a different weird groove in this great tune!

Also, which of the Subranges do you hear in 7? And, if it's got different parts, at what point in the timeline?

thanks!

Edited by encym

//update// I've found your 9/8. It's in the triplet hi-hats. And the second BD is on the shuffled 16th after the 1 of the second bar. Counting the 16th pattern at the start, before the triplets come in, gets you a 13. ///update.

This is fun!

i think its much more challenging to make a catchy non weird sounding song in an unusual time signature than it is to make a crazy/fucked up sounding one.

all you need is love

Yeah pule definitely has a regular meter but i love how i can get lost trying to figure out when a phrase will resolve.
