Aphex twin, open minded until it comes to

Recommended Posts

Indeed...

Also, about lessening the variety... if he makes a new track and uses pine cones and tesco-bags, would the result be less different to his other works than it would be had he used a guitar? It's kinda wacky to say he's limiting himself cause he doesn't use one specific object to create sound with. If you'd like him to do guitar tracks cause you like guitars, that's another thing. I find guitars pretty dull but I wouldn't mind either way. Except for the Pusher, he still needs his one locked away from him.

it may be a philosophical decision... i'm not totally firm about it but I AM NOT A DJ, and i would probably turn down any DJ gigs offered to me unless it was super $$

this doesn't mean i don't enjoy a good DJ set, or go to see DJs...

so you figured he hates guitars because he doesn't use them in his music?

he's used real instruments in his music like piano, violin, pizzicato(sp?), harmonica etc. how is that being close minded. guitars is the one instrument that has been done to death, there's little to innovate. so it's understandable he doesn't use them, and it just wouldn't fit with the kind of music he does imo.

The 808's been used to death, but he still uses it a lot.

Guitars can sound like anything and come to daddy is essentially a filtered out guitar distortion. I mean, with the exception of come to daddy sounding like a guitar-ish, there is no other tracks.

It's a shame because it's just as beautiful sounding as any other instrument and just because something has been used and experimented with a lot is hardly a reason to avoid it. Avoiding it is only going to lessen the variety of your tracks.

uber distorted guitar like CTD is just clipped (ie squarish) odd harmonics really. you can do it with any instrument, obviously the instrument you choose to distort to fuck will impart some color to the sound.

but not that much obviously, cos most folk think it's guitar on CTD but it's an MS-20 allegedly.

so to sum up, i don't really understand this thread. does the OP want richard to learn the guitar? or just use samples of it, which brings us back to my point above really.

Using samples of different instruments is what made aphex twin interesting.

I'm not saying he should do this, I'm saying that I think it would be an advantage and also bring some more tools to his arsenal if he was a bit more inclined.. it's a shame he isn't, but the fact that he uses pretty much every other instrument does push the fact he doesn't like it.

Personally, I cannot even comprehend to even think that the guitar doesn't bring its own emotions.. You can get something very very heavy with guitar and there is nothing like it.

I also have read his interviews before where he states that he prefers 'technical anger'.. (or something of that manner) rather than 'shouty/loud/distorted' music... That's pretty fair, but I just don't know why he hasen't experimented a bit more on this..

Perhaps a lot of you with the opinion that guitars are boring should listen to some good metal/rock..

but if it's sampled, it's just manipulation and treatment of "a sound" just like any other sample.

anyway, how do you know there isn't a bunch of heavily treated guitar in rich's arsenal of samples?

that being said, i would actually be quite interested to hear what rich's opinion of sunn o)))/earth/boris (in places) is...

Guest Pete is your friend

ive got it!

he samples the beatniks main gruitar for his remix on 26 mixes for cash

une Femme N'Est Pas un Homme

opening loop is a guitar, no doubt. so that pretty much ends that mystery . . . who wants to join me in the delta v threaD?

I'd be very surprised if Richard wasn't into a bit of the ole industrial rock of the late 80's/early 90's when he was a youngster (e.g NIN, Ministry).

But then again you always have to take whatever the mans says with a pinch of salt.

Guitar.

Shame he's got a personal hatred for it.

Personally for me, there is no good outcome for being closed minded when it comes to instruments/sounds to use within audio.

Meh I don't really care what instruments he uses as long as his music sounds good, which is why I am here :P

you're from vancouver.
