the musical possibilities of heavy compression.

Recommended Posts

question may be a bit offtopic by now, but I don't really get it when people say "this compressor is better than, say, ableton's standard one."

doesn't a compressor always do its job? it just depends on the settings you give it I always thought, is there something I am missing?

same question goes for EQs somewhat, I know that the EQs that come with DAWs don't have that many options, but I'm not talking about that, I'm asking about the 'internal engines' of those compressors and EQs really, do they actually differ?

There is a lot of variability in the designing process in how a compressor can respond. Especially when emulating analog compressors a lot goes into the way it reacts at certain settings like fast attack and release. Some compressors may change the release curve depending on its speed. Other's may have their own internal sidechaining that may lowpass the input signal and use that as a trigger. Stuff like that. I like using the Melda compressor because it has a feature where you can draw the curve for what the knee looks like and the threshold and stuff. I also use it as a compressor/gate combo. Almost like a transient designer. It isn't the best quality compressor but its fun and I still use it. http://www.meldaproduction.com/freevstplug...mcompressor.php

Thanks for the replies. Forgot to take into account the deeper things going on in each compressor. Seems like a nice plug-in Bubba, I'll check it out tomorrow, thanks!

I fucking hate mainstream techno/trance whatever and the sheep zombie kids that love it at raves so this video made me feel peachy keen, fucking twatz

there is a fine line between getting a super heavy smashing mix that sounds good and completely destroying the percussive transients and the natural bounce of the music. Clark is just about on that line.

clark's music is kind of like cheap vodka -- it's a blast, but you get a killer headache if you overdo it
