Need some good music like Autechre

Recommended Posts

FX randomiz makes some really weird but melodic processing heavy electronic music. He's only put out one solo full length but i think it stands up pretty good for being over 10 years old.

So is this a general IDM recommendation thread or what? Well anyway

sorry if these have been suggested before

caribou - old stuff is more electronic, new stuff he uses more live instruments, the guy is a phenomenal musician though, especially on drums

tortoise - jazzy, laid back groovy music with a good amount of layers. Ae remixed 2 of their tracks, actually.

cepia - this stuff isn't insanely technical or genius or deserving of a subforum, but this guy knows how to write good idm tracks. he plays with dynamics very well

also, non-idm:

explosions in the sky - 5 piece, drum, bass, 3 guitars - these guys are not very technical at all, in fact a lot of their lines remind me of simple idm synth lines, but i have never ever seen any band so good at controlling dynamics.

i don't think any of the bands you described are in any way similar to autechre, but i freakin' love caribou, tortoise and explosions in the sky.

brownout is seriously one of the most interesting albums i've heard in a looong time.

the whole thing is so... underwater or underground or to be even more specific: In one of those underground tributaries.

Things that are in the vicinity of musical quality to Autechre, to me:

non-"electronic"-

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock

John Coltrane - Interstellar Space

John Coltrane - Ascension

Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch

Pharoah Sanders - Karma

Claude Debussy - La Mer

(non-obvious) electronic-

gas - pop

anything by lithops

anything by microstoria

anything by oval

ANYthing by Mouse on Mars, with my favorite being Autoauditacker

believe it or not, Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding, by Venetian Snares, is pretty fantastic

Shpongle. Yup. Future Sound of London. For sure.

I think early Chemical Brothers is amazing. Maybe that's because it's my childhood love, but Dig Your Own Hole is pretty awesome.

EVERYBODY CHECK OUT TAKAgI MASAKATSU

trust me guys. specifically the album coeida

Kettel is pretty awesome too.

I've always found stuff like Arovane, Proem, and Four Tet to be pretty boring/no good. I should probably revisit that stuff sometime soon though.

Richard Devine is an obvious one (& other Schematic artists)

Just listened to the new Robert Logan, "Inscape", too. It's excellent. If you like Autechre you'll probably like this.

What are the best Apparat albums WITHOUT the gay singing? Some of the older stuff I've heard from him is good but at some point he turned into hip gay musics.

yeah seriously i love his production but the vocals are awful. he should stick to beeps and boops.

I've worked through just about all of these now, thanks so much for all the input ppl

why no mention of mu-zig or cylob? Never heard any of their stuff but like is it even half decent?

they are both better than "half decent". Probably no one mentioned them because neither sound like AE. I suggest you listen to both, and with an open mind.

just wanted to note a few recs here that i fucking love so far:

Ambulance - Curse of.... Fantastic fuckin album, very experimental and it happens to lie in one of those areas of music that Autechre could potentially have branched to around the LP5 era which is pretty nice.

Biosphere - Substrata: HOLY SHIT! I did not know this sort of thing existed. Absolutely fantastic all around and I fucking LOVE the twin peaks samples "The things I tell you will not be wrong"

Kelpe blew my motherfucking socks off so props to whoever that was that rec'd them for me

OOO is great too, as is brothomstates, Tim Koch, Spooky, Speedy J, Robert Logan, Meam, thanks again for all the music recs and feel free to keep them coming because I honestly have not had enough exposure to IDM type of music and I did not know there was such a vast gold mine of quality shit out there.
