If you think describing Hostel as "torture porn" is inappropriate, I dunno what to tell you. Whether the term porn is used too often to describe things or not, well that's another discussion, but I think "torture porn" is a film genre that was very much born out of post-9/11 identity politics.

i think the term torture porn has some merit, but i dont think Hostel fits in that genre at all. the Saw franchise seems to be a perfect mainstream representation of that term

i wasn't pointing at you for using the term, but it just reminded me of how overused adding the word porn after a genre name is these days.

there are lots of others...years ago (a decade ago? ouch) I saw a film festival with several of his docs back to back...there was a simple one that I rather liked about a german lady on a commercial flight that suddenly broke up thousands of feet above the rainforest...unbelievably she survived the fall to earth, woke up in the rainforest, and had to find her way back to civilization. a bizarre true story, typically Herzogian.

What's awesome about that is it has Rachel Weisz (sp?) as the bereaved mom, apparently in an entirely ridiculous movie. I am so sick of her bereaved/terminally ill "look at me I'm emoting" shtick, I hope she is forever trapped in films like this and The Fountain and never gets an oscar nod and dies bitter and alone.

I just watched Food Inc, what a shitty attempt at an agit-documentary, it makes Michael Moore look like Orson Welles. All I wanted was revolting, shocking spectacle, but it was all soft and boneless. The pace was slooooow. They should have added in an expose of the global food situation, too. It's not all about the US you know...what about melamine in the milk in china, estrogen in the fish, feeding feces to pigs, etc etc. Really weak, 5/10.

about to watch the Lovely Bones, there is a high quality screener floating around. now that i think about it there probably is a shit load of a movies i haven't seen in screener format right now because of the upcoming academy awards

lol, just watched Poltergeist for the first time, hasn't really aged well has it. Not really a classic like the Thing, just entertaining in a campy sort of way. 5/10.

red cliff - more bloated, style over substance ala 300, avatar, etc. huuuuge production and nice cinematography.

still, it was better than face/off.

Annie Hall.... Classic.

World's Greatest Dad: Quirky and funny. Robin Williams is such a lovable dickhead in this one.

Watched a couple today.

Up In The Air- Really thought it was wonderful, top performance from Clooney. Great to see Reitman bounce back after that last shitty film.

The Blind Side- Kinda half wish I'd read the book before now, but I never thought I'd watch a Sandra Bullock film and come out speaking of her so highly afterwards, a really strong performance I thought. Very much a feel good movie and those kind of films always touch me in a weird way. I don't think the trailer does it much justice.

Big Fan- Patton Oswalt is sensational, surprised he pulled off the role but brilliant nonetheless.

apart from the naughty words bit which wasn't offensive but rather annoying, this was very good stand up. the stuff about kids and marriage after kids reaffirms my desire to have none and laugh at those who do. recommended

piece. of. shit. laughable really. the characters stupidity in this film is amazing.
