Just watched another good Korean film, "the King and the Clown".

A (very) loose historical fiction about some minstrels who entertain at the king's court in the earlier part of the Choseon Dynasty.

Shout outs to the saracens, musulmen and celestials.

Guest Benedict Cumberbatch

somers town 6/10

the fact that it was 1hour8mins finally made me watch this film. shane meadows is a great storyteller and despite being very simple (and staring that kid again) it was a really nice film. some laughs too such as tomo in the dress. the color suddenly jumping in at the end was pretty horrible and jarring. better than expected.

the assasination of jesse james by the coward robert ford 7/10

beuatifully shot. brad pitt was actually good in this despite some here-come-my-lines-any-second-name face pulling (as also seen in inglorious basterds). nick cave shows up too! it was the sort of film whee you recognise every actor but forget who else they played and that is distracting. i didnt really understand the shooting itself, why did he take off his guns? seems he knew what was coming but why did he let it happen? needed more horses.

finished the proposition too. nice film. story is interesting but not compelling, music great, ray winstone fail. probably a 7/10 for the mood

Man I really enjoyed that film. Some quality acting and an interesting look at history. Plus the cinematography is gorgeous (of course, it's Roger Deakins). Interesting that they shot most of it in Alberta.

Quality under-noticed film.

I dunno about a "fun" watch, it was pretty damn depressing...

The subtitles were brilliant though, I'm assuming you had the same ones, translated in a Shakespearean sort of form...

the devil's backbone... 6/10

id probably give it the same rating, everybody says this is guillermo del toro's masterpiece but i thought it was basically his most boring and bland film. I'm not a big fan of his to begin with but i don't understand the hype surrounding this movie at all

Bad Lieutenant (original) - 8/10

movie has aged quite well, barely any narrative except you watch a man slowly go towards rock bottom.

Harvey Kietel has like a total of 3 paragraphs of dialogue, the movie is ridiculously slowly paced and ambient.

I love how there is no overriding forced message or morals at play, its almost like you're just a fly on the wall in this guy's really fucked up depressing life.

part where he shoots the radio in the car is gold, A+ hilarious and sad at the same time.

shines very brightly after watching the half-baked werner herzog 'remake' , done with a lot more grace and ease.

Agreed. I thought it was quite boring as well whereas Pan's Labyrinth is his TRUE masterpiece.

one of my favorite films of the last ten years. the director really came a long way from 'chopper'. that was a great film too but jesse james is on another level entirely.

innaresting.... i thought it was good but not that good. all we need now is tidget and troon to pipe in and we may have found watmm elitists favorite film

so what else did nick cave score i might as well follow this trend i started without knowing

actually tonight i have badlands. not sure what to expect. probably long held beautiful shots of murder and bad voiceover

i believe the nick cave (and warren ellis) scores are jesse james, the proposition and the road. although i think he contributed some music to john hilcoats (the proposition, the road director) earlier films.

badlands is great. its what you would expect from a malick film.

one mans bad is another mans naturalistic

Sherlock Holmes - meh. About what I expected. Sequel out when?

Although i do have to say I am a fan of Robert Downey Jr. - sometimes. not in this particular instance though.

agreed 100% with you both, i couldn't even be bothered giving reasons for my score cos i was totally unmoved. the points i gave were for some great acting (mostly from the kids) and cinematography. the explosive finale was too little too late, i was passed caring.

pan's labyrinth's definately a better film imo... more like a good 8/10.

i like Robert Downey when he's not playing himself, which unfortunately is often.
