takeshi
Can any WATMMers recommend some good films about skinheads (UK WATMMers I'm looking in your direction)? I've seen 'This is England' and 'Romper Stomper' but I'm looking for films (documentaries or fiction) about the early skins before the group splintered. Guest mrx
I saw the moog documentary yesterday and thought it was awful. It hardy covered any history of the company beyond that they made the minimoog and modulars. It also didn't say much about the Bob moog beyond what you can read on wikipedia. I was surprised that there wasn't anything on bob's encounters with raymond scott. The two highlights of the film were the Gershon Kingsley bits and pamelia kurtin playing the theremin. takeshi said: Can any WATMMers recommend some good films about skinheads (UK WATMMers I'm looking in your direction)? Guest Benedict Cumberbatch
The Hangover 9/10 i had high expectations and it didnt disappoint. i could probably complain about it alot (i find i remember bad parts much more than good parts usually) but it was hilarious and for 2 hours i laughed my ass out. enjoyed it even with shitty popcorn. fuck the 4 star on clement street! want to see it again. the photos at the end left em laughing all the way home!! I think after This is England I dont need to see any other movies about skinheads. That probably was the top of the mountain The Hangover - 7/10 Not nearly as funny or clever as I imagined it would be. The story wasn't that tight. There were hardly ANY gags. Just not the wall-to-wall laugh fest people say it is. lumpenprol
So i started watching Twin Peaks again due to all the TP talk on watmm lately, and it was basically the same as I remember it when I watched it on TV as a teen. First season is superb, but everything after gets progressively worse. It sucks that by 35 years old you basically have x-ray vision when it comes to plot devices, mcguffins, red herrings, padding to draw things out, etc. It's more obvious to me at this age when they switch writers or add something to manufacture drama. Somewhere there's a photo of me in high school with what amounts to a mullet, holding nunchucks, and wearing an "I killed Laura Palmer" t-shirt. If I ever go back to my parent's house I'll try to find it, scan it and post it, lol. First, I've gotta say I'm surprised Zaphod liked this, given his pickiness about films, and the fact that he's Asian (right?). Second, the film was pretty fantastic up through the scene where he rescues the girl from the black thugs. I loved every minute of it up until that point. There were several genuine lol moments. After that it all went downhill. Third, the hmong boy was a painfully, distractingly bad actor. The scene where he's banging on the basement screen door screaming "Walt! Walt!" has to be one of the most embarrassing performances ever seen outside a student film. Why Eastwood cast him is beyond me, if it was so hard to find a good hmong actor he should have just used a Chinese kid or something. All the "macho" banter in the barbershop and construction site, when Walt is trying to get the hmong kid to "man up", was completely unconvincing for all involved. Nobody talks that way to each other constantly; it was very forced. If the film had managed to keep the delicate balance it established in the first half hour or so, it could have been 10/10 for me. As it stands, 7/10. Worth the watch but really flawed. Guest zaphod
let's just say, i'm not easily offended. i actually agree that the film went downhill after the part you pointed out, but i just loved it so much until that point that i was willing to overlook it. also, that kid was terrible and i laughed my ass off at the basement scene when i saw it in the theater. but it was fine, at that point i figured the movie was a complete b movie.
