A few films recently watched.

watched this for the first time at the weekend, on blu ray. Seriously, martial arts looks ace on blu-ray.

Universal Soldier - Regeneration 8/10

Gave this a go to have a laugh at Van Damm and Dolf trying to regenerate thier past glory but what I wasn't expeting was the one of the best and brutal action films I've seen in a long time

a basic story but a gritty (Hollywood free) we'll directed action flik thats better than all the previous Uni Sol films put together which even tickles the feet of the Bourne films in places

looses a little pace in the middle but JCVD is hardcore with a blade and its worth watching for the fight scenes alone with the massive Andrei Arlovsk

I watched 20 minutes of The Road and turned it off. It may have gone on to be decent, but I couldn't be bothered to find out. For my tastes, Hillcoat got it all wrong. It felt like generic apocalypse catastrophe porn / Hollywood plot driven crap. The first thing to irritate me was music combined with direct readings from the book with somber Aragorn voiceover. Then, I couldn't understand why they manipulated the image so heavily. Learn how to use a fucking camera, people. It's like they hired some hack to shoot a really flat image and then let the post production team go balls deep making it look like Fallout 3. Then, of course, I look on IMDB to find out the same dude shot Twilight and New Moon. Moving on...

The Boy was too old compared to my reading of him in the book. I thought he was like 8 or 9. The actor playing the Boy was 13 when they filmed and he really is ugly as fuck, too, which doesn't help.

Probably not meant to be filmed. Its source is deeply literary and would absolutely demand that the relationship between The Man and The Boy would have to light up the screen. I think Hillcoat made it insignificant by relying on 30 second moments of hugging, crying, etc.

Anybody get through the whole thing and like it? Atop hated it? That's a horrible sign.

I made it to the end... I share your same thoughts with the post processing, but what really bugged me was the missing chemistry between the man and boy. They might as well have seen hugging poster board cutouts of Fred Savage 'cause there was nothing but derived Hollywood drama sprinkled between them. I didn't read the book, from what I have read the film adapted well, but I found the story riddled with a few too many plot holes for me to really sink in and enjoy it.

My Life To Live - 8/10

I always enjoy watching a Godard film, especially his early work, before the auteur persona, where breaking Hollywood-bound rules and kowtow critics was his modus operandi. There is a certain rebellious righteousness that's not found in his later films. Lovely film presented in typical Godard fashion.

War Photographer - 10/10

Amazing documentary following James Nachtwey. Highly recommended.

Adventureland - 7/10

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Selected it randomly, half drunk, out of a list of best comedies of 09 and it ended up being one of the better tasteful coming-of-age type films I have seen in the genre... I would hold it very close to Dazed and Confused. Relateable characters, realistic setting, and superb acting. Above all, its subtlety is what impressed me the most.

Allright, seeing Splice tonight, unfortunately only the dubbed version, but for free cause of those coupon things

the score was pretty fucking stupid at times but better than some cheesy rock song action score I guess.

there was some really cool scene's but yeh no 8/10

Timecop 5/10 - Hilarious attempt at trying to evoke a Paul Verhoven gritty scifi vibe but fails miserably. Van Damme keeps playing up his broken english to try to sound like a 'too cool for school' Arnold but just ends up coming off like a one dimensional cartoon character. Ron silver was probably the only fun part about this movie, when he plays a weird supernatural villain he usually shines and distracts you from how shitty the movie is (ie: the Arrival)

Elephant - 2/10

Easily one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. An unfocused, artsy-to-be-artsy, up-its-own-ass, non-Canadian, fanny-filing, rendition of Degrassi.

i also was not impressed by the road. the kid annoyed me and it wasn't very interesting. didn't either think the cinematography worked well enough for a movie like this.

Mhh... it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. That last 15 minutes or so ruined a lot of good things the film built up previously imo. *spoiler* why did it have to go down the standard-horror-road ...

what I liked about the film were first of all the technical aspects, the camera work wasn't impressive or anything but it wasn't meant to be, it was very appropriate, made good use of certain methods without being too obvious. the cgi was very good, considering it wasn't be biggest of productions, again, very appropriate for the theme of the film, organic. I liked the whole beginning, pretty much anything that took place in the lab. also little things like how they covered the "newborn" with that plastic box thing and put that random heavy object on top. reminded me of what I do when I catch the mice my cats carry into the house. little metaphors like that artificial birth canal of their pressure chamber thing.

not-so-good things - the character development wasn't really believable to me, did she really need to turn from loving mother into nazi bitch right away, and couldn't he who had been so concerned about safety and ethics and all have kept it in his pants ... as for the acting I can't really say anything since I only saw the dub. I suspect it wasn't bad. I didn't really get the message of the film, if there was any. The general topic has sort of been covered long ago so I waited for something new, but wasn't rewarded.

So the film started promising and after the firt half I was very excited as to where it was going, then I was disappointed. But I saw it for free and I don't regret it, it was worth a try. All in all I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone though.

Lost in Translation

Fantastic film with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, two married people who spark off an extremely intimate relationship with one another while away from their partners in Tokyo.

Does anyone else feel the physical pain at the end of this film when they part? It's the first time I've ever physically felt that emotion of leaving a loved one through the viewing of a film before. Maybe it's because I've been through a lot of that pain recently and really know what it feels like. I dunno, but it hit me.

Highly enjoyable documentary about street art, directed by none other than Banksy. It's not really focused on Banksy or any artist in particular... it isn't even fully focused on street art... its main focus is really: "it's basically the story of how one man (Mr. Brainwash) set out to film the un-filmable. And failed."

Salvador - 7/10

This is an excellent slice of American/Stone cinema. Really the perfect role for Woods... I wasn't too sure of the Belushi character at first, he didnt really seem to have a place in the film except to act as a warm blanket for the audience to cuddle with and play tickle-belly when shit got deep. Aside from its bleary, unfocused outsides, at the core, this a great film.

some pretty funny bits but my main problem with this film was the music. afican child was meant to suck. it did so thats fine but we're meant to believe he used to be good right? this fat kid likes mars volta AND aldios snow? he played some older stuff and it was just as bad. i know i know its a comedy etc but that lack of effort really puts me off from enjoying everything else. also lots of slow parts.
