lumpenprol
Just saw Body of Lies, one of Ridley Scott's better ones, I thought, if only for what I imagine to be a fairly realistic take on one aspect of modern warfare (the remote coordination between people on different sides of the globe reminded me of what I do daily in my outsourcing job). Thought some of the dialogue was good, but the characterization was fairly one-dimensional. Liked the scene where Russell Crowe acts like the stereotypical "ugly American" in front of the Jordanian dude, that rang true to me. Wish the climax had been more complex and gripping - an ending where DiCaprio's character got murdered due to the machinations of the different sides would have been much more potent, probably - but I loved the way Crowe stuffs sushi in his mouth at the end - perfect. 7/10, better than slumdog millionaire, milk, benjamin button, or any of the other films that I could only get halfway through in the past year. Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Hide lumpenprol's signature Hide all signatures After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside. - lost cloud I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. Guest zaphod
yeah that was alright. they definitely nailed certain aspects of our foreign policy. but then there wasn't really anything engaging about the characters or plot and i felt they completely pussied out at the end of the film. i walked out wondering why and how it got made, and why it ended up so muddled with so much talent behind it. but it was better than syriana or the kingdom (lol), as far as that kind of movie goes. i still don't think americans really care about a film that talks to them about the various issues of trying to engage with the nebulous area known as "the middle east". although these films are fairly one dimensional and preachy and maybe that's the problem. i would really love to see something that doesn't associate "muslim" with "extremist" or present the middle east as this dark homogeneous cesspool where everyone is insane and carries a rocket launcher. the cultural texture and political issues are so complex that i don't think a hollywood action film will ever be able to cover it. I thought Three Kings did a pretty good job for an actioner, at least in terms of confounding expectations...though there certainly wasn't any cultural depth to it. I really wish Body of Lies had been just a tad smarter and less Hollywoody. But it was good as far as it went. My girlfriend often puts on Rick Steve's Europe. If you haven't seen it, it is basically a nerdy white american visiting various european destinations. Anyway, there was one where he strayed from the path a bit and went to Iran. This episode was fascinating because we got to see Iran as it really is (apparently full of people that like Americans and are eager to engage in a dialogue with them). He should lots of nice vacationing spots and shopping centers and cities, along with some of the smaller towns where things aren't so modern. It was nice to see it depicted as something other than a giant nuclear arms facility run by madmen and drug dealers. Anyway, my recent viewings: Knowing - 5/10. The story could have been interesting, but the movie did nothing with it and therefore fell flat. Forgetting Sarah Marshall - 5/10. Meandering comedy with a few good moments and a few funny lines. Hausu - 7.5/10. Hilariously absurd and surreal Japanese movie from the 70s.
