Where to start?

Recommended Posts

So I want to introduce both electronic music (basically) and Aphex Twin to a friend of mine who is definitely very into music, just hasn't gotten into anything WATMM related yet. What album is the best place to start you think? Obviously the most accessible album is SAW8592, but I think someone who is somewhat skeptical of electronic music, might not hear the unique sound that album has to offer. I was thinking Drukqs would probably be the best choice, but it is a very daunting experience the first few times you listen. Then was also thinking I Care Because You Do, but that album more then any becomes appreciated through the details...

Anyway, what do you guys think. Someone who has a strong listening background in rock, how would you introduce them to RDJ?

Here is my playlist that I play for people when I want to introduce them to the Aphex Twin. Notice that not all the songs are Aphex Twin!! The biggest mistake someone can make when introducing someone to an artist through exposure of a playlist is that they include that artist alone. One of the most effective ways to demonstrate the unique talent of a musician is through contrast.

Anyway, here it is:

1. Analogue Bubblebath

2. Untitled [ab3 CD-8]

3. Xtal

4. Digeridoo (Aboriginal Mix)

5. Alberto Balsalm

6. Chirpy Bird track from 1995 Peel Session

7. Windowlicker (Kriece Remix)

8. Synthacon 9

9. A Journey to Reedham (7AM Mix)

10. Taking Control

11. On The Romance Tip

12. I'm Self Employed

13. Cyberia (By Dave the Brave: mod archive)

14. Love Will Tear Us Apart

15. Nanou2

I've had luck just recommending ICBYD in it's entirety.

Although on some occasions I did have to tell them Ventolin was a "joke track" for them to accept it.

Isn't it though? Isn't it? Don't we all really know it is a joke?

EDIT: I'm from Burma, ladies and gentleman.

I'd say either Drukqs, RDJ Album, or Come To Daddy (in no particular order)

Fuck it, just give them Drukqs. Maybe a Drukqs mix?

lol @ flashbulb

i understand your concern about SAW85-92 as a starting point..but i still think being introduced to the main afx releases chronologically works best _b

Yeah, I think windowlicker is most famous/liked in house/dance music circles. I think that would be the best way. And the come to daddy EP(but leave off come to daddy, as it is kind of stupid sounding, especially when someone first hears it) , the tuss, and richard d james album. I'd also mix in some SAW 2.
