I feel as though people think of themselves as really smart if they can talk about "philosophy" in a way that makes it hard for the common man to understand

ah you see this would be that pernicious attachment to the self which makes us want to belittle others into accepting that we are their intellectual superiors. hehehe

yeah I know Pantheism is....

DMH: either you are James Joyces' retarded great great grandson or you are an inbred Brit....

I am going with choice 2!

and I feel that people who talk about spirituality and politics on message boards usually get harassed even if they are 'really smart' or just wanting to talk about what interests them...........

I fail to see why people make the assumption that since our actions in the physical world strongly affect each other there should also be a spiritual connection.

well, science claims that our consciousness comes from an evolution of physical matter. buddhism believes consciousness has always been there, and it's most pronounced with those who have developed language. and our actions come from our consciousness. and so our spirituality and actions are interlinked.

you have not correlated logically why spirituality and actions are linked. you dont have to have "conscisouness" to affect things in this world. it helps, so you know what youre looking at before you kill it. i think thats the most important detail here. its not that im aware of my existence. i wasnt as a kid, i wont be when im 90 years old shitting my self with a brain tumor that blocks my ability to recognize my family. i have on pretty good account that when i was a kid, i ate insects and tore up the grass outside my house. i affected the world. those were not subjective experiences! i dont need consciousness to do that, i just need a brain that can give me the motor functions necessary

what makes you want to use your brain to affect those motor functions into use? normally you would use the term free will. you chose to pull up the grass and you chose eat insects. but then why choose to do those things instead of petting kittens and looking at rainbows? you probably wanted to eat insects because of some idea who came up with - in other words something from your past.

you could argue that you ended up like you did because you were born with a certain metal chemical balance or that you were held in a certain when you were a baby or that you copied other kids, or whatever. the point is you have a whole mental world that dictates your actions. so it's pretty clear, imo, that your mental world dictates your physical actions, and other people's mental worlds affect their physical actions, with in turn can affect your mental world and then your mental actions.

now this mental world is only "spiritual" if you believe this mental world is not simply a result of past actions, and how others have affected you, but it had some form of existence - in the form of an eternal soul or consciousness - before you came into physical existence, which then affects how you act. i don't think there is any proof of this unless you take as proof people's claims of reincarnation as true or whatever. but even if you don't believe that your mental world is affected by some ethereal existence i believe stuff like meditation, trandionally associated with spirituality, can be quite useful to help you sort out your mental world, and thus your actions, and how they affect you and others.
