Do you enjoy the act of discussing music?

Recommended Posts

I've realized after attempting to write several album reviews or small recommendations if you will that every time I do it nothing about it feels natural. Explaining music just seems so pointless... yet the fucking worse part about it is... in social situations it leaves me completely dumb founded when it comes to naming albums, artists, genres I like... and I often give just really generic stupid responses, because nothing else really comes to mind.

I just get blank in the head.

Yet, I spend probably 20% of my day thinking/listening to music... seems weird.

oh i hate when the conversation gets to genres. i always immediately cop to liking idm, for some reason. i hardly listen to it anymore but i say i like it because i guess i think the sheer act of being so honest about something so potentially embarrassing will get me pussy. like for instance, i had a girl recently ask me what kind of music i liked (this was on a second date) and i mistakenly told her the truth, which is to say that i like electronic music. then we had this conversation:

her: oh...so like techno?

me: no, i mean, i like techno, but more experimental

her: oh...so what exactly?

me: well, ha, it's, uh, it's called "idm"

her: oh...so what's that stand for?

me: well, it's a stupid name, really, so stupid...but...intelligent dance music...but it's so stupid and i really listen to mostly indie rock and jazz and it's so stupid but i suppose it's better than eletronica but i mean...so stupid

i am amazed i'm not a virgin

lol yes

I usually feel fine about discussing music if the person at least knows there's other genres of electronic music other than techno and trance.

But holy shit i hate looking through the dance music section, you got to look through a lot of shit to find the good stuff

and most record stores organize all electronic music into the small dance/techno section in the corner of the store

Yep... fucking pisses me how poor some of the selection is given even if their indie rock other stuff is mostly good...

i found that mu-ziq guy in the indie section once, bought that duntisbourne album and it was decent...

haha yeah. it's always just one large Dance section. not that it really matters, i'd hardly expect record stores to have both drum and drill'n'bass sections.

and 90% of it is ibiza trance anthems vol. 28

I think a "braindance/etc" section would be nice, or maybe an "experimental" section would be popular

I'd be happy with two sections: Trance and Not Trance

I just say "Braindance" and get puzzled looks.

I never had any trouble articulating the types of music I like to people. I also never use the terms IDM or braindance in those discussion.

It's becoming apparent that the reason for this is the fact that you do not like it/them.

I just like to explain music more by descriptions of the sound rather than a quick genre label. BoC and AE sound nothing alike. Why describe them using the same term?
