It's becoming apparent that the reason for this is the fact that you do not like it/them.

I just like to explain music more by descriptions of the sound rather than a quick genre label. BoC and AE sound nothing alike. Why describe them using the same term?

they do actually sound alike. or they did

wispy pads and clunky beats and all that with effects

but your point still stands, almost, 'idm' contains about 4 different 'styles', so 'idm' can be the genre and there's unnamed styles of idm

nevermind. i was making a joke about how earlier you dissed just about every awesome "IDM" artist in one fell swoop.

No, I got it.

I'm just sayin'

Arovane - Lilies is an album that is accessible to just about anybody. If I describe it to someone as "chill music with some really cool beats and a lot of piano", they're much more likely to check it out than if I describe it as "Intelligent Dance Music" or "Braindance".

Especially since it's kinda crappy for dancing.

I got ya. When people ask me if that's techno, I say sort of, just a lot more complicated, less repetitive (for the most part) and the beats can be utter madness at times. Call it the "thinking man's techno" (how pretentious is THAT?)

I dunno, i'm dancing my ass off right now listening to Gantz Graf by Autechre

some sort of twitchy, spastic dance in which i may break most of my bones (but that's what IDM is for, right?)

yeah, i can dance (if you can call it that) to just about anything other than straight "noise". Even the most mental parts of Drukqs, and most Autechre.

DMX Krew is my fave to shake a booty to though.

Techno is the opposite of everything I like about electronic music.

What is "techno"? Paul Oakenfold? Paul van Dyk? BT? Moby? Fatboy Slim? Chemical Brothers? Augmatic Disport?

lol

most people at least know about aphex twin, so my conversations can at least go something like

me - i like electronic music.

person - oh, like the apex twins?

me - yeah sure.

and im not just making 'apex twins' up to make the person sound ignorant to electronic music or anything, but that really is how people tend to pronounce it.

The best description that I can come up with for this stuff is:

Sounds Made Electronically Generating Musical Arrangement.

Or SMEGMA for short. The fans of this music would be known as Smegheads.

!! lol

this sounds like an airplane landing on a minefield

If someone asks to listen to my music i always turn on autechre's lentic catachresis full volume and look at their reaction. One time when i did that my friend stared in front of him for the entire duration of the song, and when i asked him how he liked it he said "good" and walked off.

That's such an awesome song.

I like to play people stuff off Rossz Csillag. It's got the familiarity of traditional music so they can get a sense of context with the fucked up, odd time signature beats. It's pretty much unanimously liked by everyone I play it for.
