Clark is my favourite Warp artist these days, haters gonna hate.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

his sound doesn't reach some kind of pinnacle technical achievement, he is just so far removed in his production style that his music seems alien when compared to the closest equivalent. like he went the long long way round to make something that people usually just set up a synths, effects and beats to make.

I completely disagree with your statement that his sounds aren't a pinnacle in technical achievement in a few ways. Now I am not a top tier mastermind sound design/manipulation producer but I have heard quite a lot of advanced techniques and at this point I have done a lot of research to understand how a large part of it is done. I have also listened to quite a few of said technically progressive music whilst boiling my brain with a square or two of Lucia. Listening to Totems flare for the first time last night while frying less than many times before with less technical knowledge than now:

I was still left completely bewildering to another level I have never experienced before by many subtle and some monstrous technical perfections and transformations he has made with his sounds. Today I listened to more of his records with a few different setups completely sober and I was still just as impressed.

His demonstrations of using monstrous amounts of compression whilst still retaining a sense of dynamic transient clarity in his records is astounding to me. I am very anal about over compression when used wrong and yet he compresses his records even harder than most shit I am frustrated by while his albums still apparently keep my anal retentive hate for over compression dumb founded and in awe. His fluent ability to combine sampling/organic sounds with extremely synthetic instrumentation on that record so intertwined and connected like they are conglomerate organisms... Then shift, mutate and transform those entities so dramatically is very different and mystifying like no other producer I have heard.

That being said listening to Totems Flare for the first time last night understand a very specific circumstances really just was extremely exciting to me as a soul searching student of music production and I am still feeling that child like amazement. So feel free to take what I am saying down a few notches. I get really excited about music sometimes but... I can't remember the last time a producer as impressed me purely from a technical standpoint this much. It has been a long time.

I too love Totems Flare. Astounding album, close to my heart.

So essentially I agree with you. i just try not to think about his production style because I love how it mystifies me.

When I think of a technically perfect work, I think of like minimal techno or something where all the sounds are so shapely and perfect. And with Clark I feel like he's rewritten the book on production all together. So I am similarly in awe of his style and his music, but I have expressed this poorly.

But my god do I love my new desktop!

if you want a clark subforum keep discussing the clark topics. if there are not many joy rex will see no need to add a subforum

I think I need to buy totems flare. I purchased Turning Dragon and love it - its filthy. Its the only Clark album I own, and by the sounds of it I need more.

What you really, really, need to do is go get Empty The Bones of You - basically Clark's best release (IMO) so far. Fucking epic tracks from beginning to end.

That reminds me of an old joke:

Q: How do you make a woman sound like a dolphin?

A: Try putting your dick in her ass - she's go "eh-eh!" (bad attempt at spelling a dolphin's sound)

no doubt

Hooray for The Bones. In a way I prefer the less clean production. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be this one. But his new ones are great too. Turning Dragon is actually the one I like the least.
