i think the final product of avatar will be a very fun beautiful movie experience but interspersed with a lot of cringe inducing dialogue some of which is designed to make pg-13 targeted audiences giggle and cliche plot elements that made people want to forget Titanic

yeah, we shouldn't get our hopes up too much in terms of plot and dialog - very few big budget movies deliver in that regard. There were plenty of cringey moments in LOTR dont forget.

Still, as you say, I think we're in for a pretty nice 3D trip.

Quite like this shot from a French magazine, very natural looking, the way the neck muscles are rendered

Some more pics of Sigourney here, but ignore the hyperant!

Snippit from some recent behind the scene footage shown to the press...

  Quote
The footage shown to us will absolutely revolutionize the way we look at films. To see the state of film right now, one need look no further than next month's 2012. A large, loud disaster-movie-of-all-disaster-movies, the film is jam-packed with tons of horrific disaster scenes of biblical, world-shattering levels. You have seen almost nothing like it, and yet people are already yawning, joking about how many times an audience can see the White House destroyed before it loses any meaning at all. (This time it is crushed by an aircraft carrier caught in a tidal wave.) But Cameron's Avatar footage is incredible. When put in context, Cameron's "Big Blue Smurfs" (as some have cleverly -- ahem -- called them) are magnificent, incredibly expressive -- it's hard to believe they are entirely CG.

The vistas that Cameron paints with are spectacular and unbelievable. There are times where you see the background -- distant mountains and waterfalls -- fade into focus, and you feel as if you are there, almost forgetting that this is a movie. You gasp and ooh and ahh at the world these characters find themselves in and never for a moment do you feel like you are watching something familiar. It is all brand new, wonderful and more than worth the money you slapped down to see it. And that's all before you even get to the story, a modern update of the classic John Carter of Mars, taken in new and interesting directions. During the screening my wife kept leaning over and whispering her wonder while I stared, glued, almost entirely dumbstruck by the footage.

edit; This doesn't affect my desire to see it, I really do want to.

I don't want to create a thread about this so i'm gonna ask this here.

Would Wiggle Stereoscopy work in film?

What i'm thinking is instead of 24 fps you could have twice that and alternate the frames with the left and right perspectives. Would that work or would it be too much of a headfuck to be watchable? or maybe it wouldn't create an effect at all at those speeds.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

I think it could work if both cameras have some form of synchronized triangulated focus. But then, you might need it to be doubly projected; I'm betting people would get sick after a while watching something like that, and they wouldn't even know why.

visuals look beautiful, dialogue is cringe worthy kind of what i figured after seeing the 20 minute avatar day preview

I'm not too worried, it seems to be about as cringe-worthy as Aliens (maybe more cause of the love story aspect) but yeah, don't be expecting some amazing literature from this... just kickass visuals and an epic story/ride

i don't remember any of the dialogue in Aliens whatsoever being this far into the realm of cringe inducement if at all. did you see the 20 minute preview? the main character utters the phrase 'bad ass' and 'cool' several times while inside his avatatr

edit: this line at the beginning of the trailer with giovanni ribisi saying 'this rock is worth 1 million per kilo' just so awful and cheesy to me, im surprised they would put that in the trailer.

btw thanks for posting the HD version, the yahoo page is fucked and it wont let me click on the hd ones

I don't get the visuals, some parts are cartoony while others realistic, to me it just looks like high budget fan-made Halo 4 trailer. Maybe I should watch it with sound.

Nice! Thanks for posting.

I'm so pendulum in my expectations for this one - one minute I think it's going to rock my balls off, the next I'm terrified it'll be a 3D Bayfest of cool looking shit with no soul. . . .

but, it is James Cameron doing sci-fi, which hasn't produced a bad movie yet (correct me if i'm wrong)

I have to admit, the more of this I see, the more accepting of it I am - it might be a good movie after all - will it live up to the hype though? No.

What a hilariously uninspired "alien" they've come up with. I can only think, "What is that, a level 8 Night Elf Druid?"

i've realized recently why they did this. if they made a non-humanoid alien, then audiences wouldn't be into the love story.

i don't know if sacrificing a potentially awesome and creative form of creature is worth a cliche love story.

Fucking exactly. It's not worth it at all, but what does anybody expect from James "Titanic" Cameron? This is such a non-event.

Oh wicked, they gave it flesh tunnels, that is so cool!

this dan c guy seems like a fucking asshole

Aaah, if only I was 15 and naive again, this would be areal treat.

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

But by using a humanoid alien design they could also use real people instead of the horrible CGI but they didn't. Plus the fucking big eyed animu look...
