That's just it - I think, perhaps (trying to remain respectful to the artist) there is no 'talent' behind it - just an ability to mimic existing techniques very well. Probably a bad analogy, but like when someone can copy artwork very well, but is unable to create their own.

if it was some kind of quietly placed(heh) rip as you think .. i reject the idea that the person/s has no 'talent' .. as they are not slavishly copying one individual track or another (which in itself still involves a lot of planning and research) .. but 2 separate styles .. then in those styles generating novel content which holds artistic merit ...

i'll leave my (guarded)opinion on the rest of this matter to one of the mu threads (@mu) ...i will say though in the case of phex'ee .. seems like a good way to garner feedback on pieces in progress (although the game would then be revealed at the release of the eventuating album .. but given the time that's elapsed since the last proper album.. it wouldn't matter that the device used would be exposed and so would no longer be useful in future) .. also if we were to slant into the cynical .. this sort of thing is great for building publicity ...

I said the person was mimicking the aforementioned artist' styles in music production, not ripping off actual tracks per se. Knowing how to do cross-hatching well does not make you capable at drawing.

but it isn't just crosshatching now is it ... give credit where it's due ... it's not a sample pack of drum and synth loops .. but a page with tracks on ... wonder what you'll say if you find out it's really aphex on one of them ...

yeah i mean, maybe my producer chops just suck, but i think it would be HARD to ape these types of tracks this well. throwing together some random fx and beat choppers and breaks does NOT come out sounding like Steinvord, it comes out sounding like shit.

Yeah, there's the rub - perhaps I'm not really qualified to make an opinion on this since I haven't tried making music myself (well, waaaaay back on an Atari 1040 STe with STB Tracker, but that was just silly drum loops), and I am sure it is very hard to emulate anyone's style, but I still think that the talent here lies in the (re)production techniques, not the finished product.

It's a skill. Something you learn and practice.

i really fail to see how anyone would think this is rdj or the pusher.

it kicks ass tho. reminds me of beneboi's stuff, in a good way.

productionwise i find it a bit flat at times.

that is all.

some of these tracks are quite good.
