well i just downloaded the only thing floating around the internet called Aphex Twin 2004 Warp Promo and it's quite a bad fake, it's idm with tons of bit crusher effects edit: and i triple checked with multiple versions... all the same obvious fakery

edit: if someone is trying to pass their own music off as aphex and actually had a vinyl record pressed of it that is taking fake album hoaxes to a new level indeed, although it wouldnt be so out of the norm. As some people here might recall there was an Autechre fake distributed to itunes and other mp3 stores, i think its actually still there. ill post something later if i find a link ( and no it wasn't me)

Piccadilly have deleted the record from their website now.

it surprises me that record shops get caught out by these fakes so easily.

i remember last year phonica records pissed off a hell of a lot of people when they sold a bunch of 'represses' of old chicago house records (such as this), which turned out to be bootlegs.

why the hell wouldn't you seriously question shit like this when it comes your way?

Hmm perhaps being cynical but I doubt they were 'caught out'. Selling these things at such a ramped up price speaks volumes - even for an 'import'. jacderida is right in that if you shop online for tunes all the time, you see similar, highly in demand items pop up from time to time, and you learn how to smell a rat.

Saying that, it would be fucking hilarious if these were actually legit tracks put out in this matter, designed to look like a bootleg in every way possible. That would be rather amusing

haha i feel bad for the people who bought this, i just listened to the Aphex Twin 2004 Warp promo again, its quite awful

so the 500 copies that were already sold out were just the december promo? that is quite fucked up

what's more fucked up than Picadelly selling this though is who was the one who got it pressed up, and what pressing plant would have done it.

people say that store has a good reputation and i have no reason to doubt it so maybe they got smooth talked by a clever hoaxer into reselling these

edit: although i just thought of a quasi logical theory (could be because of my fanboyishness of aphex) that i think someone might have already hinted at in this thread, but what if Aphex is aware of the names/titles of popular fakes floating around on the internet that he has hidden a REAL new awesome ep of material under the disguise of people thinking it's a fake. After all he did seem to get a kick out of the Brian Tregaskin myspace fiasco and neither him or grant made a point to clear any of it up leaving many people to think songs on those pages were Tuss tracks.

This whole thing makes no sense. Why would they list this as "Warp" if this was a fake? Someone should email bleep.com or warp.net and ask them about this item.
