Incunabula / Basscad E.P. / Anti E.P.

i remember the first album i heard of them was tri repetae, so when i progressed to incanabula i was almost shocked that the same band had created these tunes. i absolutely love incanabula and it's very hard for me to pick any sort of favorite track. ae's percussion has always been what's enthralled me in the end. their sounds are all so delicate and, despite being heavily edited, bizarrely organic. the breakdown in basscadet at about 1:55 is one of my favorites -- get's me going every time. then they throw in that vocal sample! i know it's an amazing comparison but i've always felt as though autechre took the pastoral sound of boards of canada and shot it 3000 years into the future. i just listened to doctrine and the call-and-response bassline is wonderful! the way the other layers drop in and out around it is wonderful! it feels as though they've taken one of my favorite aspects of music (constantly flowing progression of sound interspersed with refrains) and made it their core musical concept! maetl has some very nice build ups in it.

lastly, i don't know who was saying autriche was under appreciated -- it was the first one to grab me on this album!

not everyone lives in the northern hemisphere dude

therefore it never snows in the southern hemisphere..?

No, I mean the "we picked a good time to do this" part

ok, but what about snow?

I like some of the tracks on Incunabula but some of them are just wayyy too long. My favs have to be Bike, Eggshell, Doctrine, Lowride, and 444.

I used to love the percussion on Basscadet - but they aren't that great this time around. About Lowride, that's gotta be their most blatant "hip-hop" track ever. Wouldn't it be funny if the dirty south hip hop was influenced by Autechre.

And about Eggshell, i used to love the alternate version of that track called "The Egg" on Artificial Intelligence - but this album version "Eggshell" is alot more fuller sounding. Also about "Crystel", the other song on the AI compilation - that track was awesome. I wonder why it didn't end up on this album.

444 has gotta be Autechre's accomplishment track on Incunabula. It's still one of my favorites from them.

The Bcdtmx sounds very very very similar to some Tri Rep beats, I don't think it could've gone on Incuna. That being said, it's looooads better than the OG mix.

THATS HOW U NO U GOD WHEN YOU GOTA MODEL AND SHE THROW UP ON YO DICK BECAUSE ITS SO BIG AND YOUR IN A LIMO GOING TO A LIL B CONCERT - Lil B

I used to put Tri Rep above Incuna, but I'm not so sure now. I'll wait until we get to TR to give a clear answer lolol :aphexsign:

Basscadet remixes is a pretty awesome album. The spacey tracks really help break it up a bit although it is a tad repedetive at parts simply because some tracks meander for too long and the same basic sounds/melodies are present in a few of the tracks.

One thing that always gets me about the Seefeel remix is that it has such a typical "Seefeel" sound to it - that long, drawn out atmospheric, repetitive/evolving ambience, which was perhaps the last thing Incunabula needed... but Basscadet (along with Bronchus 2) is the perfect track for it. I'm thinking if they had used that track instead it would be more at home on the album.

Dude, the Basscad EP is an EP it's not an album. Seeing as the tracks are all remixes of a single track the repeating of sounds/melodies isn't that surprising ;)

Hum anyone got Incunabula in vynil?

I could spend...well a lot to buy this one.

Why the hell they never never release them again. I mean, I have selected ambient work in 2006 remastered edirion, and even if it's not collector at all, it's great to have those tracks in vynil. They should do the same with ae's first releases.

i've got the limited edition of incunabula, pressed on silver vinyl. you can get the standard black vinyl too. i would advise going for the black vinyl as it's purported to have better sound quality. i did have a second copy of the silver one, and both had a lot of surface noise compared to a standard black pressing.

So I (had) never really got(ten) into this album. i think now the problem was that any time i reached for it was at a time when i was in an AE mood, and i always ended up finding this album disappointing. So the other day (inspired by this thread) I decided to listen to it on a long drive home and I realized that a) this is the least architectural AE album for me and that it is b) the most b12/AI autechre album, which explains why it never clicked for me - i was expecting ae and got b12. that said except for lowride i now love this lp, but i don't consider Anti to be part of this ae era - it fits in better with Amber. after that comment i will go troll in the BoC subforum where such comments are generally more appropiate.

I caught my self today listening to Incunabula over and over, guess I never really appreciated their early work. (Besides Cavity Job/ Lego Feet) Doctrine is my new favourite, especially the last 45 seconds of metal-like whipslashing.

Last day for incunabula and anti folks!

What I've been doing is completely limiting my autechre intake to the albums that are up for the current week so that all of them sound really fresh again once we reach them.

It feels good to go through this all together though.

you need to settle down. Too much of anything is bad in the 1st place. Expand your horizons eh MATE?

Standouts

Kalpol Intro - I've always loved this since I first saw Pi.

Fuck I'm lazy. Yeah yeah good album etc. Never bothered with those early singles though.

It's only for 1 week, and then the album listening rotates to something else.. I have to say that I am pleased to have listened to Incunabula most of this week over other music in my library as I feel much more appreciation for it than I did before - and that can only be a good thing. I'm looking forward to the Amber reviews all next week. I highly rate Amber but I know there are many mixed opinions about it here so should make for an interesting thread.

Listened to these releases a dozen of times this week. Forgot how many great tracks are on these early releases. I love every track on Incunabula. Glad I listened to Anti EP again too. Lost is amazing.

Don't pay a lot. All of the autechre albums have been repressed fairly regularly. And given the choice, always choose black over coloured vinyl.

no, i don't think you understand. autechre is all he listens to. ever.

not anymore maaan.

This week my listening was dominated mostly by Vsnares, Lusine, Mr Oizo and a few other things here and there. Mostly Vsnares though this week and incunabula and the eps a bunch too

Well, I'm a little late. I listened three times this week as well as some random tracks here and there.

First off, Incunabula is really pretty impressive for a debut: really understated moods, textures and rhythms with a large amount of control for synths and drum machines from 93. *gets ready to hide* IMO I think Incunabula trumps any aphex release as an entire cohesive piece of music until SAW 2. The ideas are clean, clear and well produced, unlike aphex's early stuff. Now it's clear to me that at this time and possibly ever, aphex has a much keener melodic sense, with interesting little ditties flying left and right, but Ae had more on the ball in terms of creating a through composed narrative of music. It's obvious that already Ae were more interested in exploring rhythm and timbre, and it shows even on this release.

Someone mentioned that this album reminded them of winter. I'd have to disagree. Like other people here, I also feel as though ae is perfect for describing spaces, with weather included. incunabula has always been the Late august record for me. Bike, with its humid echos and hits, fill the ear, much like the claustrophobic heat of summer. The same with windwind. I can't think of a better description for the cooling evening breeze. the brassy melodies of aut riche also give of muggy heat.

Clear highlights are Bike, Maetl, windwind and 444. Maetl in particular seems quite ahead of its time. It is certainly one, if not the most interesting melody off the album. The way the rhythmic tracks bounces from one channel to another with such clarity is quite astounding. The rhythmic complexity also quite surprising. This track embodies what aesthetes booth and brown were already. While this track is nowhere near genius, it foreshadows much of what is to come. From the glitchy intro to the bouncing ball melody, it announces the future of ae more than any of the other high-class techno tracks.

All in all, two weeks ago I always considered incunabula ae's "worst" album. This may still be the case. But this would be regarded as more of a landmark today if it came out of the hartnoll studio in 93 thats for damn sure.
