Music like Boards of Canada

Recommended Posts

bibio is good if you like boc i think.

marumari was an act that a friend of mine said was like boc, i didn't really like them much but maybe they will click for you like they did for him.

to me early autechre (amber especially) and then certain newer songs seemed to be very much like boc (maybe i'm crazy) and team doyobi makes me think of boc a lot. i find caribou and four tet have a similar "feel" to boc when i listen to them (well at least "in flames" by caribou).

i know these acts are a lot more well known so you might already like them and so if these suggestions are less than helpful or not really what you're looking for, i apologize.

these were in an attempt to mention ones not already listed in this post (i def. agree with the christ comparison for obvious reasons).

what the fuck? that tycho guy is like a direct rip-off

LOL I wouldn't say he's a direct rip off. His stuff seems to be a bit more heavy on drum usage , and his tracks are A LOT faster .

He just got that classic BOC lo-fi synth sound

His album art and visual motifs are a little too similar to BoC. I wouldn't call him a complete rip-off either but I'd bet draws from them more than any other artist.

I hate them

It's one guy and you are kidding correct? In regards to comparing his music to BoC: they do not sound alike I could see his first album maybe in some aspect but beyond that.......the fuck

His synths and melodies are BoC-esque at times, but the beats are more of that Flying Lotus, "post-dilla" vibe. It's a bit too clean as well. I like it, but I can understand an immense irrational hatred to Lone...much as I have everlasting hate for M.I.A. and Girl Talk.

Oh my, well I guess it's my turn :D

I've heard all of these on what all of you should know about, the Dronezone. Dronezone is a legit commercial free user supported 24/7 internet radio station that among other things plays ambient music, where I believe I discovered Boards of Canada many years ago. They have many other radio stations that play interesting music that you don't always hear over the airwaves. The other 2 I listen to the most there that are ambient-like are Spacestation Soma, and Mission Control. Going to somafm's main page will allow you to choose to listen to any of the stream via winamp / windows media player or behind a proxy. You can also get your ambient mix over your cellphone, presumably having something with 3g or fast internet on your phone would help there, I havn't tried it yet but hope to when I get my new cellphone. I really think some people will like dronezone if you like ambient music. The best stuff (imho) thats deep chill awesomeness is usually around friday, saturday and sunday night American timezone.

These are some bands I caught listneing to dronezone/spacestation soma sometime and love their amazing relaxing beats. You may recognize the 2nd global communication track, as it was used as one of the song's in gta4's radio, and can be found on the gta4 audio cd if you got that with gta4.

And no ambient music thread would be complete without mentioning Gas - Microscopic.

definitely listen to Christ. his music is not only similar to boc, but at one point he also worked with them and actually WAS involved in the band at the very beginning. in my opinion his best albums are blue shift emissions, bike, and has a new one coming out very soon. also check out fieldtriqp for something similar

and he has an album called Sunrise Projector lol.

Hahahaha!!! Ok...maybe that's a little too much .

If they only released new music people wouldn't have to resort to second rate rip-offs(though not all of the artist mentioned in here are). :boc:

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

I can't be arsed to wade through the past 4 pages so I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned but the album Tides by Arovane is very close to the BoC sound and is just a pretty brilliant album overall. Listen to the track Eleventh!, fucking beautiful track, nostalgic and melancholy and all that fun stuff, check it below:

edit: Ignore the pic for this youtube vid lol it has no relation to the music whatsoever

here's the link to the album on discogs Arovane - Tides
