Yeah, even Lillies by Arovane is pretty BoCish... His other albums are little more Autechre like.

But hey, what about Secret Frequency Crew? those guys sound A LOT like BoC and are amazing.

Edit: I'm talking about their Underwater Hop Secret Adventure and Forest of the Echo Downs... NOT MIAMI EYES (which is terrible)

Secret Frequency Crew is indeed amazing. I wouldn't say they sound A LOT like BoC...but I would definitely recommend one to a fan of the other. Kind of similar vibe (minus the nostalgia) in the sense that it's mellow beautiful IDM, but I think they have a unique sound. They're definitely under-appreciated.

Hello, I am a newbie :D Be gentle on me please XD

Been reading the forum on and off for about a year, figured I should make a post. I love the sounds of Boards of Canada, I often find myself walking around my town and having a nostalgic moment and have some boc song segment looping in my head, despite not wearing any headphones.

So I was wondering what music you all might recommend that was like boc, in that it's ambient/electronic and kind of gives you that nostalgic awesome relaxed effect. I found this list on wiki that I am going through, otherwise I would be grateful for any recommendations any of you all might have.

Edit: Meant to put a question mark in the title of my thread oops. If an op could add that that would be cool.

sucks, doesn't it?

Yeah.. that's what I thought. I mean, theres nothing LIKE LIKE boc, but through this thread I think there is music like boc, if you get what i mean.

yeah, i mean i'm not even trying to suck their collective dick - i honestly don't think anyone has produced music with the same qualities as theirs. they certainly inspired a lot, but i haven't seen anyone approach what they've made and i don't think that's a bad thing on them or other artists.

Really? I find that Tycho is incredibly close to the BoC sound. Obviously nothing sounds EXACTLY like BoC because the only way that could work is if they released the EXACT same tracks.

Bonobo tends to sound quite alot like BoC in many of his tracks. Same with Four Tet. Cepia kind of nails the nostalgia but the rhythm structures are a bit different.

oh also, has anyone here heard Kelpe? He is fucking amazing. Really nostalgic sounding, uses all sorts of old vocal samples like BoC, the main difference is that his beats tend to be a bit more in-your-face but you guys should SERIOUSLY check out his album Sea Inside Body if you haven't yet. Excellent trippy, melodic, playful and nostalgic downtempo IDM. Here's a youtube:

P.S. that secret frequency crew album, while not really sounding much like BoC, is VERY, VERY solid!

I got into Kelpe a few months ago and have played his stuff extensively since. Very good stuff. Though I prefer the album Ex-Aquarium to Sea Inside Body, personally. I might even like Cambio Wechsel better than Sea Inside Body, not sure yet. Those two albums just feel more like his own style, I guess. And there's something about the vocal samples in Sea Inside Body that bothers me. Still a great album though.

I should add that, as I started playing Kelpe's Cambio Wechsel after my last post, it really sounds nothing like BoC. They may have a few things in common, but are otherwise completely different styles.

holy shit i didn't know he had a new album!

Really? I guess it's only been out a month. There was a thread about in the new release forum. I even bumped it after receiving the album, but no one's replied since. I like it a lot.

yes, but it would be nostalgic if you grew up with a malfunctioning tv and an unfortunate taste for lead paint

It's all relative, that's the point. BoC will be more relatable, literally, to gen Xers than a 15 year old kid. Kelpe isn't exactly nostalgic to me (dig the track though), but it sounds familar and, I dunno, I can tell the influences put into it harken the late 80s and early 90s more than the mid-70s. That's why no one should strive to sound like BoC so closely, it just isn't as meaningful or interesting to use similar sample sources or musical timbres in general.

Since Bonobo, Four Tet, and Kelpe were brought up, what the hell, I'd recommend Yppah. And just for the record, if we limit BoC comparison attempts to Campfire Headphase only, this discussion seems a little less hopeless/pointless.

Surprised to see that there’s hardly been any mention of Casino Versus Japan. He’s similar enough but definitely has a sound of his own. Go Hawaii and Whole Numbers Play The Basics are both fantastic albums which I rate up there with BOC.

Too bad he hasn’t put anything out since 04... although there was some rumor that a 10-cd (whut) box set is forthcoming...

i'm not understanding this recent fascination everybody on watmm has with Kelpe, maybe i havent heard the right stuff.

and yes the Secret Frequency album is pretty good on schematic records,
