Musical Intelligence Theory

So I was just taking a shit and wondering "Why is it certain people like certain songs usually of different genera more then others?". Why does one like the rhythm of country yet despise's the complex beats of Venetian Snares or why one likes the tune of Brittany Spears more than that of Aphex Twins?

I have come to answer that question or at least I think I have. Now this probably is a bit bias since I do like Aphex Twin more then Brittany Spears and just despise country but overall I do like almost every song I hear some more than others.

I believe that there is literally a musical intelligence (We will Call MI for Short) that we each possess, now I'm sure this has been coined before but not exactly in this manner. The higher your MI the more of of a certain type of music one enjoys and depending on your tolerance one could even enjoy everything bellow that of your level of MI. That seems to help answer my question at the very top here pretty well. The problem now is how does one measure MI?

To measure something we will need a scale. So lets just make a horizontal line and call this the MI Scale. To the left of the line will be the low levels of MI and to the right the high. So now the question is where to place each genera or more specifically each song on the scale. At first I had decided on placing one genera like Rock in the middle and Country to the left (for people with not so High MI) but found that to be to bias. So I decided it will have to be done with each song being placed on the scale. This way you can have one song of Rock being placed high on the scale or another relatively low. In the end you would see where the majority of the songs genera lie and be able to make a generalization of where that genera should be on the scale eliminating the bias part.

Now it takes one to place as many songs as possible on the scale acturtaly and truthfully. I would have done it by having people vote where the songs would be but then though of this example. Most people are of Normal Intellgince and very few are mentally challenged and very few are geniuses. If you were to make people vote on where songs should go what you would have is all the people of Normal Intelligence voting the songs of normal MI high, therefore it can't be done that way.

I rate myself a very open minded individual and knowing that I like music of all types I would start placing songs on the scale as I feel fit. However, I know others would not like this. So it would take a good team of the appropriate people to make the scale.

Like I said I got all this just now on the toilet and have always pondered the question of why one thinks this song is rawer than the other and feel as if this explains that fairly well.

If you took the time to read this then thank you, your free to throw any comment of any nature at me, cause I'm sure this idea of mine will last but an hour before it is destroyed.

Well not exactly, I like all songs and I don't really dislike any (except country lol) Screamo, Death Metal, IDM anything else I like.

Point is to explain the unexplained. The unexplained being the question that is thrown at the start.

yeah, i'm gonna destroy this idea right now:

i love madonna and britney spears and venetian snares and aphex twin.

Yay so you could put the songs on the scale. You didn't read it.... I'm not doing it based on genera its based on each song. So all those could possibly on the high side. That doesn't destroy anything simply validates what I said.

You might just be taking this whole IDM-thing a bit too seriously...

Its nothing about IDM. Its just about figuring this out. If anything I'm taking the whole this Music Is Better then That a bit to seriously.

Its all good guys, I just wanted to share.

dude, i don't wanna deal with the implications of saying that a madonna song is better than an afx song. i'm sure a few fanboys would descend upon my house and murder me in the night/heat.

You won't, in fact the both could score the same MI and be right on top of each other on the scale. In the end you would just average out who had the most songs on what part of the scale.

Do you think it's a problem that you'd essentially be assigning these MI values off the top of your head, with no criteria to explain your choice?

Also, hy stop at giving an MI values for songs/tracks. Why not also include sounds in nature, like storms, washing machines, farts, your neighbour having an argument with his girlfriend?

Yes thats why I'm not. The right people would and I'm not sure who those are and there won't ever be.

I understand where your going with your second comment. Let me just say that this was a Psychological attempt at explaining why and don't be shocked if this ever comes up by some famous physiologist in the near future either.

Some of the most annoying/stupid people I have ever met obsessed over IDM, some of them obsessed over avant/noise compositions, and yes some listened to crappy pop music.

In the end I found taste in music is a horrible tool for making a strong judgment on a person's character.

You guys really take shit seriously? I didn't even take my own shit seriously. You can say what you want about my thread but don't insult my intelligence.

I'm not obsessed over anything. Can a mind not think out the box?
