I used to go to Amoeba and buy things based solely on the cover. It was expensive and only had about a 15% success rate but I couldn't help myself.

i bought richard d. james album based solely on the cover; it was my first rdj-related purchase

Awesome, it paid off for you! I was addicted to finding new music and I hadn't yet discovered file sharing yet. Would go to the electronic section and just load up my arm with CDs until I couldn't fit anymore / it was too heavy. Had a good job and still living with my parents. Probably should have just saved. If it weren't for IDM I might have a house by now!

I remember my first RDJ purchase... Streetlight Records in Santa Cruz, CA. Based on a recommendation from a new friend, hadn't even sampled it yet. After giving it a proper listen I immediately began purchasing anything I could find by him. Nerd. :aphexsign:

Very nice, but those odd sizes make them a bitch to store.

i used to do this a lot.. that's how i found out about nine inch nails, i just saw the downward spiral in the cd store one day and thought 'hey this looks interesting' and just bought it without hearing a note.

same with this album:

I/O - Calm

luckily most of the stuff i've bought based on packaging alone has been pretty great music too. except maybe some lemon jelly album or something, it's pleasant but i can't listen to that kind of music anymore without thinking of fatboy slim.

there's rumours the artwork on a forthcoming pselodux release is going to be awesome.

lots of little cutouts in the sleeve and you can change the pictures in them with the wheel on the right-hand side

I remember amusing myself with my brother's copy for hours when I was a little kid. Thankfully I was kind to records even then and it survives to this day. I think the Japanese paper sleeve reissue of the CD reinstated the picture dial.

I've never been a fan, but that's probably one of the best CD design ideas ever. Fucking beautiful. I'd die before ever opening the CDs though.
