Orchestral Autechre

Was given an iTunes gift card, and in my reluctant to buy anything digitally, chose Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin. Not a bad album at all, but lacking in arrangements that differ/change the original tracks significantly. It wouldn’t have hurt some tracks like Blue Calx, and Meltphace 6 for AWS to elaborate on the melodies and themes.

I was introduced to AWS via this forum, by someone linking AWS’ cover of Autechre’s Cfern. I really love that cover, it made me look at the original in a different perspective, actually helped me to like it. Hearing their covers of Aphex Twin it got me thinking... what would you guys like them to cover by Autechre, if anything? What tracks do you think would work best and which ones would there be variations in the arrangement?

Of course, it doesn’t have to be Alarm Will Sound. I am, after all, just talking about orchestral arrangements.

Nine

obvious choice

Teartear

this song is restricted chaos

Tewe

much like the Cfern cover

Acroyear2

there is a really cool melody behind the percussion that could very well be explored

Rae

yes please

Arch Carrier

comparable to Philip Glass’ Orchestration of Icct Hedral, would be pretty “epic”, could be really dramatic actually, sounding like something that would be played during a film after one of the main characters die – has a rather exotic/koto-esque sound about it also

Eidetic Casein

<3

LCC

I don’t really know what this would sound like, but I’d be damn interested in hearing it

Ipacial Section

see above

The PlcLCpC

no such thing as enough PLC!

haha, both alarm will sound (aphex and autechre cfern) was like, i had to hear it out of curiosity, but once i heard it once i could happily forget abut it. so i dunno, i wouldn't want anything that i'd actually listen to, but for the curiosity/listen once and forget about it factor, maybe just shit from untilted actually. eg>Iera!

true. though i'd still go and see an orchestra playing idm stuff. i wish the london sinfonietta would come here, lol.

and yes, one of these days i'll work on that metal cover of iera.

I'm not going to lie, I really don't like AWS. To me it's like the equivalent of taking a fantastic song, converting it to midi, and running it through an absolutely ancient midi driver. Aphex twin's music sounds OK with orchestral but that's because he uses alot of orchestral sounds to begin with. Autechre's music is largely about the specific sounds and the meticulous degree to which they are created. Much of this gets lost when the song is covered by an orchestra.

To me, the biggest loss is the strength of the percussion. Nothing cuts as hard as a nice solid synth kick, but orchestras sound far too organic to mesh well with Autechre's music.

Of course, it's just my opinion. Clearly there are a bunch of you here who disagree.

i fully intend to orchestrally cover incunabula

See that wouldn't bee too bad at all.

Once you get to Chiastic Slide though alot of the magic will get lost in the transition. Incunabula, Amber, and Tri Repetae would all sound fantastic as orchestral covers though now that you mention it.

i think you're forgetting that a lot of autechre's drum sounds post-1995 are actually samples of found percussion. i don't think there are any synth drums on chiastic slide (except on cichli), i may be wrong though.

one word - untilted

although i agree with you that a lot of the percussion is found sounds, it's still processed vastly beyond the original acoustic sample.

but then again, thehauntingsoul is kinda missing the point of the AWS covers - they're meant as acoustic versions of the tracks, and generally acoustic versions of tracks lose their punch...look at the Nirvana stuff for a perfect example. although great sounding, a lot was lost

Maphive 6.1 for sure.

Then once an orchestra actually does play Autechre it will be continually posted on this blog over and over. At this point we'll coin the new term "Orchestra" for when something is old news.

lol
