some songs would actually go really well (altibzz, end of cichli etc) whereas with some it would just be really interesting to hear how the mental ae sounds are done with real instruments. pen expers would be awesome. i'd love to hear the beat done with a standard drumkit.

a lot of the crazy percussion would be awesome if it was transcribed for a huge percussion section. AWS's drum kit just doesn't have enough range sonically to really satisfy me. you'd need like 2 kits, some timpani, chimes, some industrial parts to whack together, 4 feet of steel wire and a washing machine to properly cover an ae song with acoustic instruments.

Actually, do you know what? Someone needs to make an orchestration of Amber in its entirety. ALL of it. Foil would sound awesome in a concert, maybe a digeridoo for that main background noise, and maybe some real life small explosives for the sounds later on in the track.

Montreal would be a beautiful piece of music to cover. It should be possible with fairly conventional instruments, though the clicking that starts @ 0:17 may require some skill for a performer, or perhaps a mechanical device could be used.

Just thinking about a Silverside cover is making me hard. Imagine those heavenly strings right there on the stage! I can picture it now. At 1:07, maybe we could get some actual singers to vocalize those distorted samples. Imaging a whole chorus making that "it-wari-ra mit" noise! The only little snag would be, of course, it may be quite tricky to produce that pitch bend at 3:28, which is a shame because it's my favourite part of the song.

Slip. Oh yeah. Someone's gonna have to learn that melody off by heart, get their head around the time signature, and play it, but it'll be worth it tenfold. I mean, we're talking about truly beautiful music here, no?

Glitch may require a lot of reworking to get a version that would sound good on stage. And after about five minutes, we get a lot of noise that seems to be impossible to cover. Oh, wait, what about those tube toys that make a weird noise when you turn them upside down? If they were at the right pitch, I'm sure enough of them at the same time would produce a good result.

Piezo has a very beautiful section that would be essential for any full cover of Amber. A solo of that instrument playing for the rest of the track, with a chorus approximating those alien computer noises if we're staying faithful to the idea of using no electronic devices. If not, maybe that sole synthesizer wouldn't be so bad, eh?

And now we discuss the sublimity that is Nine. Listening to this earlier gave me the whole idea of the Amber cover. It would definitely be a highlight, with an array of traditional Chinese instruments playing the most exquisite ambience. True bliss.

Which would lead straight into Further, which has one of the best introductions to any song I've ever heard and would be perfect for an orchestration. The rest of the track would take quite a few percussive instruments, with something for the high-pitched beats, and something that'll take a lot of loud, repetitive bashing, like the tide smacking against the rocks every few seconds. Some string instruments should take care of the ending.

Yulquen will be an interesting piece to cover. There are some subtle background noises which could be represented by a steam machine, but the main noises could be tricky. Maybe a very good keyboard would do the trick, or perhaps something more unconventional would come in handy.

Nil should be more or less straightforward. I just know we'll get a great result, how could you screw up something that sounds so beautiful?

And then we round it all up with TEAR FUCKING TEAR. This could be the most badass pieces of orchestration ever created. People have said before, it's restricted chaos. I would definitely want to listen to this, if it ever becomes reality. What's scary is that all the individual noises seem more or less compatible with real instruments, yet the end result would sound so unlike anything I've ever heard from an orchestra.

So, in summary, someone out there has gotta make this happen! Awesome would be an understatement! I'm sure Warp Records would pay for something like this, they've done it before for some drukQs tracks and Pete Standing Alone, haven't they? And if it does happen, it would open the door for something a little more challenging, like Confield. I've always toyed with the idea of building a VI Scose Poise machine, which would be programmed to physically make every minute detail of sound in the track and essentially play the whole thing. It would look like a mutant insect covered in drumstick-like "tappers" and lots of metal bars and pads to jam out the beats. The ambient tones at 1:57 are the only aspect of the track I have yet to figure out, but I'm sure the VI Scose Poise machine could be fully functional at some point in time...

Dragon you are so right.

When you said about Nine being Chinese instruments I almost drooled and it gave me an idea. What if each track on the album were performed quite differently, using a large variety of instruments. Montreal for example sounds like it could work as an odd mix of ethnic/classical instruments. Whereas Silverside would be purely classical, the pitchbend could be achieved by having the singers/strings lower for an instant, abrupt - but the whole thing would be so ethereal that it wouldn't feel jarring at all.

Foil & Glitch would both be rather demented ambiance pieces, that if anything would serve as an introduction and interlude. Expanding on the Piezo melody would be awesome, even if the more abstract "effects" weren't translated this song would be incredible.

Further would be similar to Foil & Glitch, except relaxing instead of haunting. Yulquen would probably only work if it was shortened dramatically. Nil gives off a bit of a Japanese vibe. Teartear would be such an incredible finale IMO. Of these all Teartear and Nine intrigue me the most (hence they MADE the first post). I've kind of reiterated what you said but yeah-I really don't know why (apparently) Sean/Rob disowned Amber.

Forget about orchestral ae. It's like hauntingsoul said, their music is made of elements that have been thought to sound like that, and an orchestra would just kill the boner.

Plus, what do you need an orchestra for, when you have Oversteps? It's pure classical music

im mucking around with vletrmx with strings for fun, got the melody pretty much down but its pretty difficult to get it all smooth and nice heh. but im thinking its pretty boring to do that anyway. i might drop it and try to do some rhytmic stuff, that would be more interesting i guess. even though a kind of epic string vletrmx would be good i only have sampled ones here so would never sound amazingly big :p
