As with black metal I might like, it's fine until the bloke starts croaking. The music is epic but I can't take the vocals seriously at all. But that's just me.

Black Metal is fucking kool. I used to thrash out to that shit last september

Caralaaaaaan......God is in......his holy temple........

yeah some people in scandinavia take this shit really serious, but most people know it's all about getting drunk and laid and playing dress up and being awesome.

the main reason for all the dress up is cause girls find it fucking hot and will sleep with you

Don't mind the music (when i'm thrashing out) but totally avoid the women who are into this scene. Just all the piercings and that kinda stuff, you often see pretty girls who have pierced themselves crazy. They are so heavy into the scene.

I really dig Darkthrone, and I like these vocals over the cleaner, theatrical stuff by black metal bands now. The early lo-fi releases of the scene are so much better.

Darkthrone is also awesome because both members are otherwise normal blokes. They have a sense of humor outside of their music, and their music is arguably darker than most of their peers.

Yes, Darkthrone is the best to come out of the whole black metal movement. I used to follow alot of black metal religiously, but nowadays it's only Darkthrone, old Bathory and some more obscure stuff. Also Ulver, seeing them live next month!

Darkthrone's myspace is also a favorite site of mine since the 'band of the week thing' started. Always some pure raw music, and Fenriz' compilation albums always have a few new bands I dig. I also emailed briefly with fenriz (also a big electronic fan) nice guy with heart for real music instead of scene and image. More bands from that genre should have that attitude.

yep, darkthrone are the best. all you really need is "a blaze in the northern sky" and "under a funeral moon". awesome music, and i still love the covers!

Nice, Ulver should be excellent. Some of Burzum's tracks are brilliant, though some of the purely synth made ambient stuff is absurdly repetative (I guess that's what happends when you record in jail, by youself, and you're misanthrope). Beyond that, I haven't listened to much other black metal and likely won't. I'm more into sludge, doom, post-metal, etc.

That's cool you talked to Fenriz, I've been meaning to check out Neptune Towers, his ambient side-project. Supposedly Nocturno Culto, Darkthrone's other member, is now a schoolteacher.

indeed.

Like another poster here, I also grew up on Slayer, Pantera, Megadeth, Sepultura. I was fairly impressionable and by age 10 Gwar was my favorite band. I'm actually really glad I didn't find out much about black metal until I was older. I saw what bands like Kiss looked like and it made me curious as to what they sounded like. I was pretty let down when I heard them. Was expecting some out of this world demonic shit. Then I found Skinny Puppy and my world was complete. :)

Kokoon - kudos for linking Brenoritvrezorkre, one of my absolute favourites. Paysage D'Hiver is also god damn awesome.

There is a lot of great BM, but of course a lot of shit to wade through.

i'm crapping some mega turds in my underpants here dudes

if you mean that those tracks i posted weren't *scary* enough, i can agree. they're not scary, but some of that stuff does sound very otherworldly to me.

funny things are happening too, some bands that should've stayed "underground" keep getting dug up by the likes of pitchfork &co hipster crowd, which results in heaps of their (much lesser) contemporaries. but fortunately, there are quality (and original!) bm bands, coming from all parts of the world!

Wolves in the throne room, Two hunters.

" Truth be told, and to commit a kind of heresy, if Joy Division had appeared some 30 years later as a black metal band, they would actually be Wolves in the Throne Room." well put !

I feel this way with BM especially, it seems a lot more hit-or-miss than other genres. It's such a strange scene: between the NSBM shit, the handful of contradictory (but sometimes decent) "unblack/Christian" BM artists, and all the bands that are goofier than Dethklok, it almost seems worth ignoring.

Fenriz (Darkthrone) said in an interview "if we are Hank Williams then modern Black Metal is Garth Brooks."

"Shit to wade through" would make a brutal track title.
