BM or not, its easily one of the best record of the decade.

yeah it's bm allright. i mean it's very different from the scandinavian oldschool, but it's one of the fine examples what can be done with the aesthetic. very creative and atmospheric. i also agree it's one of the best records of the decade. however, after hearing it for the n-th time, i once went back and listened "diadem of 12 stars" again, their first album. it simply blew my mind, even if couldn't appreciate it that much a while before that. i now hold it as the band's best output.

Kokoon - kudos for linking Brenoritvrezorkre, one of my absolute favourites. Paysage D'Hiver is also god damn awesome.

There is a lot of great BM, but of course a lot of shit to wade through.

I feel this way with BM especially, it seems a lot more hit-or-miss than other genres. It's such a strange scene: between the NSBM shit, the handful of contradictory (but sometimes decent) "unblack/Christian" BM artists, and all the bands that are goofier than Dethklok, it almost seems worth ignoring.

Fenriz (Darkthrone) said in an interview "if we are Hank Williams then modern Black Metal is Garth Brooks."

"Shit to wade through" would make a brutal track title.

i kind of lost any contact whatsoever with all the bullshit bands and sub-scenes in bm. maybe i did work hard for that, but i really don't recall doing it. so in a way, i'm not even aware it exists - now, there's a world of good and interesting, mainly atmospheric black metal around me. everywhere i look, there's a band that completely amazes me. right now, it's all about the pacific northwest scene (the "cascadian" black metal), which also includes Wolves in the Throne Room as its most prominent representatives, though they're now generally looked upon as they've sold out. that doesn't bother me much, but there are indeed much more "alternative" band coming from that scene and almost everything i heard so far, i *really* like.

now playing - "Fell Voices - As Air To Flame, So Time To Oblivion"

Speaking of Unblack, Horde's show is, believe it or not, the best "BM" show I have ever seen. Funny, that.

That's awesome. Any unblack I've heard has actually been decent, like Horde or Antestor, maybe that's why they were recieved with so much hate. I find it's existence perplexing but understandable. There is no reason to believe that Christian artists, or any religious artist, are unable to make dark secular music, including black metal. It's just most BM artists just happend to consider the concept of Judeo-Christian salvation an absolute travesty.

I guess I'm biased b/c I believe in god myself; it's the aesthetics of BM fascinate me. I don't feel obligated to believe or support left-hand path or nationalist ideologies.

Kudos to everyone for recommending artists.

i'm really really liking this new burzum (in other words varg vikernes) album. it's very melodic, classic metal... almost iron maiden-ish in places. i don't know if you could still call this black metal but i like it.

i've only recently discovered i like black metal, it's odd. i've liked sunn o))), metallica, slayer for ages and ages... but as soon as i started to do a bit of research it became apparent that this stuff is one of the more interesting developments to me.

edit: with a couple of exceptions most notably darkthrone's a blaze in the northern sky - i either didn't know what it was called or the term 'black metal' wasn't in common usage in ireland at this point (fifteenish years ago, fuck.). also anathema - early doom shit - was quite a big deal around the same time iirc.

hmmm. how would i put it?

black metal scratches an itch that i wasn't aware i had.

My buddy was telling me about these guys. He said they are all vegans and live out in the woods or something like that.

I think I remember him playing me their album and me thinking it was pretty sweet.

i like a bit of Black Metal.

its at the point where its so extreme that it becomes mood music rather than basic songs with simple structures. well, that's my opinion anyway.

i think the costumes and make up come from being poor, but trying to look scary anyway.

edit: plus, I'm totally gay for mythical / pagan themes.

I read an interview, they are not a vegan(they are "eco-spiritual"), they recently added a guitarist who is vegan but the rest of the band is pretty much anti-vegan, they live in a crazy cabin farm in Washington, read a purty interesting interview with them, seems like the most legit black metalish primordial sound hurricanes to come out of the US

Wolves In The Throne Room - Two Hunters is purty epic for sure, I see what the hype is about, the beautiful sections are almost too good though, when it goes into straight thinly produced death metal from the cinematic landscape parts it kinda sounds uneven cause the chill shit sounds so full and perfect. either way epic shit, very inspiring

this is great

very much in the melodic death metal tradition, with a hint of scandanavia and a hot goth chick
