1. william basinski - 92982

i like ambient music to be mostly nonmelodic, to stretch out in drones over long durations, to be nonintrusive, quiet, and sleepy.

i believe this is the best ambient album ever made.

i love ambient music because it is long and quiet, thus being ideal for day-dreaming and imagination trigger.

my favorite albums would be

steve roach's dreamtime return and quiet music

brian eno's apollo: atmospheres & sountracks

the klf's chill out

dreamfish's dreamfish

biosphere's dropsonde

FSOL's lifeforms

global communication's 76:14

carbon based lifeforms' world of sleepers

and somehow included

aphex twin's selected ambient works vol II

Not sure about favourite, but most influential would probably be the dungeon music from the Zelda64 soundtracks if those count (heard it when I was <10, was the first time I was consciously aware of there being more types of music out there than what was played on the radio).

rather than rehashing classic ambient albums again and again, i want to add a new album that i love:

Yann Novak - Relocation.Reconstruction from 12K records

check it out

oh, two more:

Kevin Drumm - Inperial Distortion

Kevin Drumm - Inperial Horizon

been loving these two since they came out a couple years ago

just want to be clear that 92982 came out last year... and it is already my favorite. for what it's worth.

every stars of the lid album i would rank among my favorites.

steve roach has a few great "drift/trip" records. instead of just sleeping off while listening to them, you can treat it as an interstellar travel.

BRIAN ENO - AMBIENT 1

JOHN CAGE - SONATAS AND INTERLUDES FOR PREPARED PIANO ( i consider this ambient )

MORTON FELDMAN - rothko chapel / piano+string quartet

Yep.

the idea of a live ambient album performed in the rothko chapel is super-intriguing. presently acquiring!

There's just so many but here are a few that spring to mind.

Seefeel - Quique

I dont know if I would classify Quique as ambient.

love that album though.

Yeah, agreed. Certainly borderline.

I tend to prefer the slightly less droney, more structured end of ambient.

FSOL - Lifeforms, Environments series

Global Communication - 76 14

Aphex - Selected Ambient Works

Biosphere - Substrata

The Orb - UFOrb

Matthew Florianz, Erik T'Sas, Joris De Man - Electronic Forest

Apollyon - Veror Aesik

Spacetime Continuum - Sea Biscuit
