but i can't really think of any other autechre album that "suits" daylight but this really did.

for me, confield is music for a sunny summer day. probably because the time that i got really into it was because i was at post-highschool place of study where there were a lot of parks/etc to walk around in during my 2 hour break between classes, and i mostly listened to confield (and later draft 7.30) during those walks.

the big comparison to amber that i keep making is that the melodies in both albums, especially the barer beatless tracks recall some sort of deja vu like lost memory feeling for me. I feel like it's a melody i've heard perhaps in my childhood or in a dream but it's vague ie : Nine, Yulquen. Oversteps has been having a similar effect on me lately with tracks like See on See, Treale , o=0.

yes, i definitely get that with the end melodies of treale and O=0.

yes yes, this album is very addictive.

i am tending to listen to it whilst playing torchlight, which is a bad thing, because i'm starting to associate it with an endless dungeon crawl in a glorified roguealike. it suits it so good though :emotawesomepm9:

this sounds like an airplane landing on a minefield

people here seem to be changing their minds but i'm still not crazy about this album after many listens. what's most bugging me is that fm synth sound that is everywhere on this album, coupled with the overuse of the super heavy reverb. that synth tone just sounds really cheap to me. anyone whose had one of those $100 yamaha keyboards from the 80's will know what i'm talking about, as every single one of them had a preset or 2 that sounds exactly like a lot of the stuff on here. by the end of the album it's just "enough with the bell tones & the buzzing already!" they just didn't tweak those sounds enough to make them their own, imo.

definitely also sounds like a very retro album, like old 70's & 80's synth stuff - not the forward looking work i'm used to from autechre.

now - when i listen to oversteps and think of it as the lost soundtrack to some imaginary, really tripped out 1970's sci-fi flick, then i can like it a little better. it reduces my expectations a bit. but as a 2010 autechre album... it's a bit weak.

and yeah, that artwork is just

I don't see the  here. Confield, Draft, Untilted and Quaristice were all quite amazing

I hate that it got a 4.9.

I really want to know what caused it to miss out by a 0.1

Possibly the frequencies that make Uviol a little difficult to listen to. I dunno, sometimes I find they are just too high-pitched and it hurts my ears. Still love this track though.

fantastically bad writing... seems to be the norm these days? not just for them but... everywhere

What? That review is fine in consideration and especially well written. The opposite of the stupid hype-ridden crud sometimes peddled by NME etc.

on a second read it doesn't seem quite so bad, yeah. things like this construction bugged me the first go through: "while the splintered textures of r ess, os veix3 or st epreo give Oversteps some of its darkest undertones and occasionally evoke the fragmented outlines of Chiastic Slide."

I find that description to be quite accurate actually. I definitely see hints of Chiastic Slide in Oversteps, although to call them hints wouldn't be quite precise. Fragmented Outlines of Chiastic Slide is much better, like the subtlest traces of it are present. Not enough that would even be noticeable if it wasn't for Ae's ability to significantly distinguish their music from their other works, and all other music in general.

He's pissed that they didn't all get 5/5. Clearly a mistake there

Yeah, something about the subtlety of the bassline annoyed me at first but I think it fits well. It's just really chill and laid back.

i don't understand why you all love this album. to me it's quite boring compared to quaristice.

i think they're just trying really hard to like it. a lot of the responses don't make much sense considering how different this album is. i like a few tracks so far but i can't get past the new age -type vibe to a lot of it.

it's called being a fan. it's the reality of the situation. i'm trying to like it as well, assfuck.

The reality of the situation? Are you always this dramatic?

I don't understand the concept of "trying" to like something. I have a lot of albums, some I lament not enjoying as much as others. Like Silence by Monolake, I can't get over how boring and uninspired it sounds, I don't get how I would go about trying to like it though.

I'm sure thehauntingsoul will just tell me I'm not listening hard enough though.

Somewhere in between trying too hard and not trying hard enough is a little thing called "enjoying music", where you don't try at all.

Socrates, out!
