i sampled just about everything on this list

http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/02/23/the-month-in-dubstep-february-2010/

can't say that i found any of it to be dubstep related

i thought i would make a "dubstep track" about the infamous so called "spintle" needle :from space: of 92

http://www.mediafire.com/?qhqgnwmnmzo

the spintle needle was first acquired by dubstep readers around the internet posting on forums about synthesizers out of logic express or dare i say garageband and thrown onto eps by such famous labels as zomby and joker

somebody point me in the direction of famous dubstep

this is a thread for "elitists" apparently

whatever

i just really don't know where to look for the "good shit." the problem is that there are 2000 new dubstep releases every day and I haven't got time to listen to a bunch of stuff that all sounds nearly identical, and some of which sounds completely amateur or what have you.

all i'm saying is, maybe i'm wrong, but dubstep seems like a fad, like drum and bass, or jungle, and is at about the same quality of said genre.

drum and bass and jungle are the shit in my book, but dubstep i have yet to comprehend i guess.

I like some dubstep, the albums I've enjoyed to most are by Vex'd, Boxcutter and Burial but I guess they're not straight up dubstep producers. The ravey shit with wobble bass and movie samples gets a bit tiresome in the long run.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Excuse me? What on earth are you talking about? If I google 'Spintle Needle' this thread is the only thing that comes up. Did you dream it?

The thing you need to understand about dubstep is that it's not really even a genre.. It's just a continuing development of uk hardcore/bass music. Some is good, some is shocking. By the time you think you've got a handle on what it is and what it aint, the scene has generally moved on. This is a good thing. The people doing good stuff with it recognise this.. It's a kind of ethos/heritage, and a vague bpm range, then people bring their own thing to the plate, whatever their background might be. Most of the people making dubstep have been making tunes longer than dubstep has even been a concern - but you can't call them bandwagon jumpers (not all of em anway).

The only 'dubstep' artist I find myself coming back to for repeated listens is Zomby, he's proper. His stuff, to me, is a continuation of quality electro and techno with that nice deep uk sub, and a wicked hectic-stoned-paranoid kind of vibe. Real simple softsynths and drum samples, but tons and tons of vibe.

Neil Landstrumm's Lord for £39 EP on Mu is good too. He's a techno producer originally, so brings a different style in.

Check out Shakleton's album 3 EPs if you're after something more minimal and a bit strange.

Put in the effort, look deeper than this month's releases. Be selective. And for god's sake ignore the million and one Casper-a-like wobble nonsense youtube videos.

I like some dubstep.

Skull Disco (and the applepips stuff), boxcutter, some of Martyn's productions (great lengths is a good album), burial, mainly the dub-techno stuff I suppose, and guys like iTAL tEK who make amazing massive sounding tracks that do not rely on the wob wob.

Some of the wobble stuff was ok; but its all the same now. Im over that.

Jack Dangers did it well in Autoimmune,, everything else is shit. When you're making basslines with a Synthi 100, you can't really be fuxed with.

Whether his music is good or not, this is the worst reason ever.

Also, I'm so glad you took the time to listen to all the dubstep ever made and report back that it's shit btw. Thanks. Saved me tons of trouble.

like any genre, there's a ton of crap and white noise. but the good stuff is good.

That is an exact and succinct summary of my thoughts.

The only "essential" wobble dubstep I can think of is Mala and Coki, and anyone tied to early DMZ releases. Benga and Skream have had important releases in the past but they've become too formulaic.

Label wise, Skull Disco is good, Hyperdub is mosty excellent (though Kode9 himself is hit or miss), same with Hotflush Records and the "dubstep" from Planet Mu.

Just tread lightly, especially with remixes, most out there are mediocre at best.
