oversteps ---> Boards of canada?

Recommended Posts

Sounds more like boards of canada that previous autechre.

Not a bad thing just an observation.

Particularly

"ilanders"

the melody on "known(1)"

the chords on "pt2ph8"

tracks 6 to 10 have BoC all over it especially "os veix3"

You feel me?

But it another way... all those BoC "hippyish" youtube videos would work well with oversteps tracks.... not the autchre "future/abstract" vids

thoughts?

i honestly don't hear the similarity, either. even if autechre took some of their pads on this album and ran them through a 1/4" 2-track tascam with long, long lfo's on the cutoff, it still wouldn't sound the same :boc:

I thought it was more like Chris Clark without all the compression.

I felt like there were a few Clark moments also, which is sorta funny considering the somewhat derogatory manner they used when asked about him in an interview a few years ago.

lol if i recall all they said was they hadn't heard of him

heh I hear no clark but I admit I got mild boc vibes on qplay (synths from start, also in melody at 1:40) also d sho qub (mainly the melody: from 1:00 when the melody is complete then the beat drops, also the way the song has an extra bar or whatever (5 instead of 4 which is popular with boc) what is that anyway 4/5? I dunno much about music theory). But yeah fairly fleeting.

nothing major but I thought it before I saw this topic. afaik no other ae reminds me of boc, but I always felt boc's earlier stuff was ae (tri rep) influenced, bits of hi scores, twoism. (some of the dirtier sounds, some of the strings, the sort of industrial rhythms and use of loops, use of space in general).

Maybe if I throw a name at you like Chris Clark, a label mate of yours? Well, to be fair – I don’t listen to it shitloads, but I check out the new stuff. I think because we’ve been at it so long, we can see a flag being flung up where we know it’s third generation Warp or second generation electronic/IDM – I mean I hate that term, when it was coined in the early or mid-nineties, it was already outdated, it was a silly term. Every now and again you hear something; I mean Jackson was nice, but unfortunately it was overused and I heard the shit aspects on TV. Clark’s nice yeah, but in a way it’s a bit too knowing – there’s a blueprint just being used natively that wouldn’t normally be natural, but then I guess some people could say that about us, because Kraftwerk, Eno, Keith LeBlanc and Tangerine Dream had already existed for 15 years before we started doing stuff, so we were pretty late in the day.

I definitely agree with the BOC comparison. That's what pisses me off about this album, it's really an insult to fans. Well , an insult to those who are a minimum demanding and not "feed me anything" idm fanboys. And that fifth track with that afxish beat (4th track off drukqs). Oversteps is at times that idm gimmicks compilation that could have been released in 2001, but wait oh, it's 2010.

I only thank Ae for r ess, ilanders and yuop. You can have the rest.

this thread is so :trashbear:

what the fuck? are we listening to the same music?

Don' get me wrong - I'm loving this album and can't wait for their dreamy trippy stomping live show. I'd love another "Hemsby" set but I know this is gonna be different - more nostalgia, more melencholie, less angular beats... Sweet!!! I guess thats what some folks aren't liking about it.

This shit happens with every electronica act... expectations + actual album = disappointment.

Expect nothing -> receive everything!

PS - Fucking love the "ae FEX 3 remix" by i-forget-who!

I think I got a different album from you, cause my copy of Oversteps reeks of Autechre.It's very cohesive and quite unique. I have never heard anything like pt2ph8 and Redfall, 0=O and See on see is just classic Autechre sound, though without the staccato beats.

Its not hugely innovative and its not pushing much boundaries, but its very enjoyable and its clear how much time and care theyve put into this.

Me myself is not much of an idm fan, and usually avoid that "genre". Autechre to me is just Autechre and they got lots of funky hiphop vibes and lots of great atmosphere. If some of you think Autechre's not on top of their game, then you either have bad taste in music or you just havent heard Quarange Ep, which is as interesting as it gets.

Please Autechre make Perlence Suns and Quadrange style next time!!!!
