sorry, i just don't see the relevance to anything in this thread.

People are saying Autechre sound like Chris Clark or BoC or even just make boring IDM. So Im saying that I think they got their very own style which is also present in Oversteps. Find that pretty relevant.

frits, when the scaries crawl out of the boc subforum, sometimes you just have to shoo them away with a broom

edit: and i agree with you

I thought it was more like Chris Clark without all the compression.

I felt like there were a few Clark moments also, which is sorta funny considering the somewhat derogatory manner they used when asked about him in an interview a few years ago.

What's this? What did they say about him?

lol if i recall all they said was they hadn't heard of him

Maybe if I throw a name at you like Chris Clark, a label mate of yours? Well, to be fair – I don’t listen to it shitloads, but I check out the new stuff. I think because we’ve been at it so long, we can see a flag being flung up where we know it’s third generation Warp or second generation electronic/IDM – I mean I hate that term, when it was coined in the early or mid-nineties, it was already outdated, it was a silly term. Every now and again you hear something; I mean Jackson was nice, but unfortunately it was overused and I heard the shit aspects on TV. Clark’s nice yeah, but in a way it’s a bit too knowing – there’s a blueprint just being used natively that wouldn’t normally be natural, but then I guess some people could say that about us, because Kraftwerk, Eno, Keith LeBlanc and Tangerine Dream had already existed for 15 years before we started doing stuff, so we were pretty late in the day.

I agree that Clark can sound a bit too knowing. That's why I like Autechre... even if I don't get on with all their stuff, it never has that self-aware tinge to it that some other newer electronic musicians can have.

Knowing but fun. He's not always on top of it but Body Riddle and Empty the Bones of you are fucking fantastic records. I think he needs to shake things up a bit though, he's gotten very samey by this point and nothing since Body Riddle has struck me as terribly vital.

Ya Body Riddle and Empty the Bones are fantastic musical achievements that I consider Warp classics. Hes gotten more and more mainstream for some reason, like he ran out of ideas and start shoeing his sound into more popish shapes - but it really doesnt work. When he started singing on his last album I deleted it off my harddisk. It was just completely forced and painful to listen to. Quite sad when you consider how talented he actually is.

And of course the immensely stupid critics claiming it was his best album yet!!!! People just tend to think that the crappier music gets the better it is, which I find quite absurd.

I agree.

And that was the stuff I was thinking of when I made my comment - I love his work under Chris Clark, and I think Body Riddle is something of a masterpiece. But I've tried to like the later stuff, and it does sound too knowing and self-aware, and too poppy. I love pop music, and there are ways it can influence "IDM" or whatever this music is, but it's a shame to see someone like Clark doing super accessible, sort of pop-ified self-referencing in his newer albums, E.Ps and remixes.

Body Riddle was accessible in the right sort of way.

Just curious. What do people on the board mean when they say 'self-aware' in the negative way?

I would say Autechre is very, very self-aware. I mean they obviously listen to lots of music, their influences come from all over the place, they know exactly where they fit into the musicsphere, exacly what they want to say, and they say it clearly and precisely. In that sense, I'd think being self-aware is the hallmark of any decent musician who doesn't live in a box and knows what's going on around him or her.

But I assume it means something else given the it's used here. Thought I'd ask, as I've heard it used several times this way in the past while..

I love every single one of Clark's albums, including Turning Dragon and Totems Flare. These are obviously not of the same breed of seriousness as Empty The Bones Of You or Body Riddle which are my obvious favorites as well, but they are great records! I think its funny when people act like Clark has completely changed or sold out. Like Clark sang to sell more records LOL. Clark is the kind of artist who is constantly making music and may not always want to be making the most serious, emotional material. Maybe you have to be a musician to understand that, but when most of the music you are listening to is your own, you want a variety. Turning Dragon/Totems Flare are about having fun. It sounds like he had a complete blast making these records. Plus tracks like Suns of Temper and Primary Balloon Landing are very artful. Clark said that he made Turning Dragon at the same time as making Body Riddle, so its clear that he doesn't "suck now". I suspect his next album will be more along the Empty The Bones/Body Riddle line as he said in a recent interview that his next album would feature "... softer... music." :spiteful:

I enjoy the fragility of the rolling lol tbh. The broken lol is like our own mortality staring us in the face, reminding us to enjoy that sunset.
