In the US you can buy big fuck off military rifles just like that? I mean... comedy shows always make fun of the loose firearm legislation but DAAAAAYUMMMMM.

That rifle needs to be semi-automatic, though. I don't think you can own a weapon like that that's fully automatic. Of course you can always modify it and no one would ever know.

plus you also have to take into account the populations of the respective countries. The US has at least 4x the populous of Britain.

Britain isn't a country :trashbear:

but your point is valid nonetheless

This is the first ever true debate (in da warld  ) on guns in the making. Mainly because for the first time the two sides aren't rednecks and scared moms.

excellent point. the argument is often clouded by radicals on both sides...i mean logically the argument is far more complex than a simple constitutional or moral issue.

Further clarification needed:

Acidphakist, on what grounds\license\authorization\whatnot are you getting the carbine? Hunting, self-defense, some sort of loophoole, a personal military\institutional background with perks etc? Or is it simply legal for anyone to buy a big fuck off shootah in Chicago?

A rifle is a rifle is a rifle... Just because a rifle has some sleek military carbon fibre body doesn't make it any different than any other rifle. Fact of the matter is what most people consider "more dangerous" or "more threatening" firearms, to me at least, are usually less lethal than others. Look past the "look" of the rifle, and you'll realise there are more important factors you should consider when waging an argument, such as the size of the round, how fast it travels, and whether or not it's single fire, semi-auto, bolt action, etc...

A slow moving large projectile is much more damaging that a fast moving small projectile... That carbine is likely "less lethal" than someone with a pump action shotgun with magnum slugs. Yet, some people see the carbine as a more threatening, more dangerous weapon... because "it looks scary!".

not convinced.

Lube-

Chicago banned handguns in the 1980's. Long guns, however, are legally permitted. For me to legally own a long gun in Chicago I simply need my FOID card (a firearms permit unique to my state) and to register my firearm with the local police station.

while i believe gun restrictions definitely lower murder rates, im also curious to see how many other violent crimes exist within those societies. those statistics are often left out.

Speaking as someone who lives in the European knife capital (Glasgow), I can tell you that fending off people who are attacking you with knives/bottles/bricks is a lot easier than someone that has a gun and thus you have a greater chance of survival if you come up against someone.

Imagine this scenario, you're walking down the street and get jumped... your attacker has a knife and is trying to slash/stab you, in order to do this he needs to get close and really try fucking hard against his victim... if you have an opportunity you can either RUN LIKE FUCK or get a good knock on him and disarm him. Either way both people have a good chance of actually surviving...

Now take the same scenario except now your attacker has a gun... yeah you're pretty fucked. He'll shoot you and you're fucked "But Macca! I HAZ TEH GUNZ TO SHOOTZ BACK" you say... yes well then that makes you a murderer, and I'm not sure you want that shit on your consciousness...

Too long didn't read: I'd rather people walked around with knives mostly for protection than guns, that way I'm more likely to survive if someone attacks me with one.

Besides from that, there is a certain detachment of the mind when killing with a gun in comparison to a knife, therefore less people would be inclined to randomly kill with a knife than with a gun (because its harder to kill someone with a knife than a gun, both physically and mentally)

Oh and about gun crime statistics... pretty much all gun related violence in the UK as a whole comes down to gangs and drug wars... for example there was a gangster who was shot a few weeks ago in a car park of a supermarket and I'm pretty damn sure it was all about the control of drugs...

or even the Ice Cream wars and Paul Ferris ages ago....
