Autechre @ Bloc last night

Recommended Posts

(More info tomorrow, its been a long weekend and I need sleep....)

Had a great time at bloc this weekend, caught flying lotus who was on before rob hall, thought his set was good he looked like he was enjoying himself. Russell Haswell (*EDIT apparently not him*) played a predominantly hip-hop set and bored the shit out of me, didnt want to lose my place on the dance floor though. Found a sweet spot to the funktion 1 stacks, centre stage.... mind blowingly loud, very glad I had my earplugs.

So all the lights cut out, Autechre came on, and destroyed the place. I thought their set was very brutal. I did not recognise any of the music (think they played for about 80 minuetes), I did not even recognise any of the elements from Oversteps. Took a couple of videos which I will upload tomorrow, not sure how they sound yet might be completely distorted bass as it was seriously loud (fantastic!).

Loved it.

Genius programming to the evening too as Luke Vibert DJ'd straight afterwards, followed by Congo Natty. Was pretty wasted after all that.

Oh, and posters up around the site confirmed that Autechre are booked to play Glade Festival this year too, happy days.

Cant wait for the London show now!

Sleep time....

but

:music:

Reading the reviews of the other events, I completely agree with the savage kick drums. There was a moment towards the end of the set when a monster 4/4 beat slammed in and the room went nuts. Plenty of screaming going on as well.

You would of known if you saw Russel Haswell and you certainly didn't. fuck knows, who the dj was but he was a bit rubbish but that wasnt Haswell. i think his set was ended half way through because peoples ears were bleeding. It was the most insane set of the evening. cleared the whole place, it was brilliant. Made autechre a little less packed cos people didnt return for a while.

although the autechre set was beatin, i couldnt enjoy it enough because the bass was far too loud, everything got lost in the mix to very heavy subs. Don't think i heard a single melody.

It was insanely loud. I was wearing ER20 earplugs which made it more barable. As you say, hardly any melodies at all, but I was in the right mood for an audio assault so loved it.

Neil Landstrumm / Jim Masters the night before was a similar bass attack of techno.

I think Autechre started 10 minutes early, and the sound cut half way through the track of the guy before because it was that shit.

yeah i had plugs to it was pretty loud. autechre actually started about 5 or 10 mins late, not that really matters or anything. But what i meant was Russel Haswell did play but only for about 25 mins from about 2am, there were alot of people looking very very scared, don't know what the staff there were thinking, but it was on the line of 'have i died and gone to hell? is this what hell sounds like? Yep i've died'.

it's such a shame it was so bassy, i think i was too close should of gone to back abit, having heard some of the manchester set i have missed out on alot.

Haswell was class, so awesome to catch a noise set at a festival - shame it was cut short.

Rob Hall was the star of the festival for me, his set was flawless, I was screaming like a little girl in excitement at the front. Caught up with him after and shook his hand too, nice geezer.

Autechre were a massive letdown. Let it be known, this is a pretty weak set for them. It didn't flow very well, it sounded meaty but it didn't have much to it. I'm still a bit disappointed to be honest. They've ditched the machine drum/monomachine combo and it really pales in comparison to Untilted and Quaristice tours :(

i wonder what the later dates will sound like compared to these first shows... hopefully they get their shit together as the last 2 tours were out of this fucking world. listening to the notsogood recording from the other thread, sounds like the set isn't as... composed? mixed? i don't know.

the whole thing with ae is that they're always trying new techniques on every release/tour. i haven't been to an oversteps set (and won't unless they hop over the atlantic), but i applaud that they never release the same shit twice. they're never riding the coat tails of the previous release and most always treading new ground. the mark of unhindered creativity is releasing shit sometimes, lets just hope they get better with this set.

how were the first untilted sets? where was glasgow in that tour? beginning? middle? end?

yeah dunno, this new set it just sounds a bit incoherent and tiring? there is no suspension curve to speak of?

i'm glad i've listened to the recordings… now i've got a little time to adapt my expectations to this bass boomery, cause i know i would've been just as disappointed as Obel...

they had two laptops and a Nord Rack 2 from what i could see...couldn't see anymore than that because they were so far back on the stage :(

i second Obel's opinion on this unfortunately - it was a bit of a let down.

I guess its because I have never seen an entire live Autechre set before, so have no previous experiences to go by. Plus I had been on it since 9pm the previous day and completely caught up in the whole weekend away with my mates thing. Feel rough as hell tonight! :emotawesomepm9:

the recordings of the sets I've heard sound quite disappointing, it sounds like they have completely abandoned their catchy melodic sections and the percussion practically takes over everything.

i've never seen them live before either, and my only experience of live autechre was what Obel had been playing me the previous few days on his Cowon in the apartment.

and you must've definitely been a bit wasted - autechre actually started pretty much on time...started a little after 1am ;)

I would definitely say more than a bit! I am however going to see them twice more on this tour, so hopefully I can form a better judgement. Got tickets for the london gig, and also going to Glade festival.

The whole Autechre/Soundboard Guy argument that they are creating a unique experience in the live shows that will not translate to a recording, and that the space is part of the show (I was told this first hand), sounds like its total bullshit with this tour. Granted, its hard to tell from muffled recordings, but you get a sense of what is going on in here. It just seems kind of, um, shittier. I cant imagine in that space, being right there in front of them, there's a ridiculous amount of high-end shit we're missing in these recordings. If I had to guess, the show is muffled and bass heavy, and subsequently the recordings are muffled and bass heavy AND distorted. In both the recording and (probably the show), one thing is evident... The transitions are crap in some areas.

Its funny, I think Confield/Draft/Oversteps are WAY better albums than Untilted/Quaristice, but the supporting live tours are shittier.

Dear Autechre - Max/MSP for albums. Elektron Gear for live sets. Stick with this formula.

if you wanted to nerd it up you could get around the side of the stage at either end, one end by the bar was pretty much above stage level so it might have been possible to see in spite of the darkness. anyway I thought they were excellent, but then I took the option of getting right in front of the speakers (with earplugs I'm not a complete idiot only half-a one).
