Dear Autechre - Max/MSP for albums. Elektron Gear for live sets. Stick with this formula.

No Elektrons this time? Only laptops? Shit!!! No-no!

laptops and a Nord Rack 2...maybe more, but that's all i saw on the worktop

Nord Rack 2??? Not even Nord Modular?! Ohhhh....

there might have been more equipment, but that's all i saw on the worktop before they cut the lights. and anyway, what's wrong with a Nord Rack 2? very versatile synth

You are all berks of the highest calibre.

The new set is sounding pretty special to me, apart from the quality of the recordings. Not sure why everyone is so disappointed? Some of it sounds like it would be brain-meltingly exciting nice and loud.

Hi there,

first post. You've got a nice on-line community here - respect.

I was at Bloc too, really looking forward to the Ae gig, which I thought was (once again) a killer. Unbelievable. With Autechre live sets, it's really interesting to see how much you can remember afterwards without refreshing your memory (i.e., by watching phone-captured videos), much like a Ravensburger Memory Card game. So the first thing I remember is this constantly evolving cloud of melodic/dissonant phrases and reverberant pads, and quite frequently this or that sound from Oversteps or Quaristice was being suggested. I also noticed that, contrary to 2005 live sets, the rhythms were varying a lot this time, and transitions from one passage to another were smooth. And there was a point where they dropped

, but very different.

Regarding bass: I can't say that the bass was loud to an annoying or excessive point. Surely it was huge and rich, but not distorting or masking the rest.

Speaking of gear, I wasn't able to see what they were using (not that I cared much), and I had presumed that they had the 2005 set up (which apparently is not the case). Having some knowledge on Elektron gear, I'm quite positive I heard some distinctive MD & MnM sounds but as I said, it's not my primary concern.

I think Sean an Rob of all people know their kit well enough to make the choice of what they use irrelevant although the macbooks seemed to be the centre of attention at Manchester and I think Sean certainly had his Elektrons hiding in there somewhere as well as the visible NL2X. I also caught some MIDI controller with lights around the knobs that Rob had near his Macbook (APC40 perhaps?)

oh it was loud and meaty, there was a section that was a bit gabber too. unfortunately i'd danced like a twat throughout all of Rob Hall's set, and was too exhausted to do much during autechre's set.

but comparing to what i'd heard of the previous tours, i thought it was a bit of a let down. but then again, those who were disappointed that there weren't enough beats on Oversteps will be relieved.

They have used a bitstream in the past.

Don't rule out the human factors here. I imagine Sean sparking a spliff at his rural chateau while the kids are with the nanny at private tutoring. He's proper spacked after the "Oversteps" process and so, with ringing ears and a headache, he's looking for some respite. Mira comes in and says, "Sean, the portfolio has been really taking a hit lately and I would really like to redo those three bathrooms on the second floor. We could also use another Audi just for the city as well." Then she would twist her foot silently and put the ball in his court. A huge blue cloud of smoke would come out with a long sigh. "I'll ring Rob. Fetch me my laptop; surely there's something knocking about." The Oversteps tour was born.

edit: if they replace their elektrons with laptops, maybe they sampled elektrons and use it in max :)

another good theory although they did mention creating there own MIDI sync algorithms in MAX so there must be more stuff to sync too than just two macbooks

syncing laptops with inevitable latency is tricky to do alongside hardware

I'm no sure getting geeky about this is going to get us anywhere but this is why we are here.
