Yeah, they're bewildered when they aren't sure people can hear them when the microphone might as well be in the next fucking county. Is your neck tie talking? No? Then hold it to your goddamn mouth!

Slap a lavalier on them!

Assuming they don't walk in front a speaker and that your room isn't too reverberent, sure. That solution doesn't work for every situation.

You have to know the room and what kind of microphone you have at hand and the behaviors of your clients before making an assumption like that.

Yes, I understand that it doesn't always work. It was said in jest. I don't envy your job. I've been asked to do live sound a number of times and I usually refuse. I'm much more comfortable in the studio or with a recording booth.

Yeah, I use lavs basically every day at work and they are a good solution maybe 50% of the time. I normally have to hide them so clothing choice is a big deal, a starchy shirt or rustly top can render them almost useless (unless you can be clever about hiding them). And I don't have to deal with feedback or anything.

At least I get to use a real microphone as well, and place it myself (basically). And rent my equipment to production. Yayyy.

Lavs are convenient, but they can't replace a well placed shotgun. What do you have for a kit?

On the other hand, if you've got 6 people running around in a place with low ceilings, ya betta believe they're all miced up. Can't boom that, no sir.

My normal kit is: Zaxcom Nomad 10, 6 Lectros, Sennheiser MKH50/416, Schoeps 641 for interviews mostly, Zaxcom wireless camera hop, and a bunch of other stuff you probably aren't bothered about (timecode accessories and such). Still keep my Sound Devices 302 and Sony PCMD50 handy in case of catastrophe.

The MKH50 is such a killer mic for film. Crisp, clean, natural falloff outside the sweet spot, you rarely miss something with this mic.

That's a sweet kit! I'm familiar with the MKH416 but never used the MKH50. I've done some location sound before, so I'm a little familiar with Denecke gear. Are mainly doing film/tv or doc shoots? Are most most shoots done on Red cameras in your area?

Thanks dude :flower: yeah, mainly doc or doc-style stuff, also corporate, with some TV thrown in there. I see a fair amount of Red cams but most of the doc stuff is on C300/C100 these days. Also Sony F5/55 or FS700, still some 5D/7D as well. What kind of stuff did you work on? Do you have gear?

Also what's your post setup like?

Yeah, more and more C300 setups these days.

I mostly do dialogue edit, sfx edit/design and mix for tv docs. More features are coming in which is great fun.

You can check out our post house here and I have a very partial list of IMDb credits in my signature.

Nice to see all the diversity in backgrounds here on WATMM.

I teach. Day, night and online classes. Adjunct instructor for multiple institutions; indentured servitude for my advanced degrees.
