Radiohead go weird!

There's nothing worse than fans, right? That 'orrible horde of proles who traipse around the world after you bellowing out your biggest anthems, clamouring for autographs and begging you to play "that one about the creep". Radiohead were certainly sick to the back teeth of them after the huge success of OK Computer sent them stratospheric – hence the cunning plan they concocted to send them all packing.

For their fourth album, Kid A, the 'Head would release a record inspired not by the emotional and poetic pain inside Thom Yorke but by Autechre, an avant-electronic duo from Rochdale who had sold about seven records. "Instead of soaring melodies and crunching guitars," the band no doubt schemed, "we'll just cobble together some noodly bobbins and get Thom to wail a bit." The result? Everyone loved it, Radiohead became even bigger and – 10 years and countless more noodly, waily albums down the line – they are feted as one of the biggest, most critically acclaimed bands in the world. D'oh!

What an utter load of bollox from the Guardian. Besides, wasn;t it Aphex Twin thats often cioted as a Kid A influence?

That Guardian thing is utterly terrible. 7 records?

Kid A isn't even that weird, I've never got sarcastic reviews like this about Radiohead. These people must not listen to any music unless it came after the 60s, is Western and very, very popular.

Thom says LP5 is 'one of the best albums ever'. Sean says: 'well he's wrong, we've done loads better than that, but, then it's only an opinion'. I remember stuff like that because I'm sad.

Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors off Amnesiac sounds a bit like Aphex Twin's 'Shiny Metal Rods' except it's really annoying.

They have indeed done loads better than LP5.

I do like Radiohead plenty but they obviously don't sound a fuckin thing like ae. "Inspired by" doesn't necessarily equate to "sounds like". Unless, of course, you're a moronic journalist who finds it amusing to crack wise about music you don't listen to.

'Push/Pulk Revolving Doors' is great fun though, as is all of Kid A and Amnesiac by my reckoning. Respect to em for exposing their predominantly pop-tart audience to music of a less obvious nature.

I remember around the relese of 'Kid A' Thom Yorke listing in inerviews albums that were inspiring him, and I'm sure 'Tri Repetae' was in there.

I'm also sure I remember an NME interview with Yorke where there was a box explaining who Warp were, and one of the Warp founders saying in 20 years 'Kid A' would achieve the status of Bowie's 'Low'.

I'm gonna stick up for Radiohead here. 'Kid A' musically, artistically, and commercially was a statement that I can't recall any another band of their status being bold enough to make. You could accuse Radiohead of jumping on a bandwagon I guess, but I think they were sincere with 'Kid A'.

I think 'Kid A' is a great album too.

yeah kid a is a masterpiece. i remember hearing it in full on the radio before it was released, it was the first time radiohead ever really got my attention - that said though, the releases that followed it failed to amaze me as much, though in rainbows is 'quite good'.

and as for radiohead tracks that sound like autechre,

LP5 is just too much of a masterpiece to call anything before or after it "loads better".

Except maybe Draft. And Quaristice. And Untilted. And Chiastic Slide. And Confield.

Agreed.

Radiohead is great. Autechre is great. Kid A is great. Amnesiac is great. LP5 is great. etc.

Exactly. It's all fucking deadly, at least from where i'm standing....

and for the record, "Treefingers" is easily one of my favourite ambient pieces of all time BD

Treefingers is mindblowing. Perfect example of why Radiohead are difficult to write off, it's just too sincere and well executed
