Which album/ep should I get?

Recommended Posts

Tough between Envane and Anvil Vapre. For me it personally depends on my mood, but I generally like Anvil Vapre more as a whole what with Envane having my favorite song on it of the two. It balances out.

Personally, EP7 is my favorite though.

I'd say just pick up both Anvil Vapre and Envane even if they may be a little out of your price range. AV is slightly more experimental in nature and Envane is more hip-hop, but both are fucking fantastic cds/records/cassettes/mp3s and pick both of them up without a doubt.

Garbage is nice too, haven't heard Anti-EP, Cichlisuite isn't that great.

If you decide you like Autechre, you may eventually pick up Tri Repetae++, which includes Garbage and Anvil Vapre. So I'd say go with Cichlisuite or Envane. Cichlisuite is more fluttery and pretty. Envane is more badass and funky.

Envane or Garbage.

i agree but by the sounds of it you will like envane more initially which will make you appreciate garbage more later.

Agreed, however I always tend to consider EP7 almost more of an LP itself

Thanks for all the advice, guys

Also, can anyone explain to me, as to why this is?

I'm impressed at how big Autechre is (based on how many replies this has recieved, and the speed at which they were recieved).... Even big bands like Porcupine Tree have much slower forums...

I wouldn't think that somone with this style of music could be so popular (no offence intended)....

I agree with this completely. No point buying Garbage or Anvil Vapre first as, if the thirst for more autechre develops, you might as well get the whole Tri Repetae++ set later which includes both of those and their 1995 album. Envane is mid-tempo, hip-hop and industrial sounding, and at 35 minutes pretty much album length but for the price of an EP. Its beats and ambience are in line with the autechre/gescom aesthetic of '95-'97. Cichlisuite marks the beginning of their next era for me, with suddenly much faster tempos and an obsessively intricate "drill'n'bass"-influenced sound that would last ~ '97-'02. It's about half an hour long. Envane and Cichlisuite both came out the same year and IMHO, despite being sold as EPs, they feel like self-contained, inexpensive, high quality, and slightly short albums. (about the same length as the UK press of Aphex Twin's Richard D. James Album, released the year before, incidentally..)

If someone could do a little description of each album, that would be brilliant...that might be a bit much to ask though :D

good call, something to keep in mind. garbage and anvil vapre are both excellent releases on their own, but tri repetae++ would be a good first album to buy and so i'd have to go with envane or cichlisuite, although my favourite track from all the releases you mentioned would be Lost, which is the first track on anti ep.

if i were in your position i'd choose envane.

yeah generally i find that when you get into the more alt genres the people who are into that stuff are,

for lack of a better term "music nerds" and i totally include myself in that statement.

i only just recently discovered this site and i was so glad when i did, i love researching music

and my favourite artists and this is a great place to do that, if you like this kind of music.

for me anyway and probably for others as well, hearing music from artists like autechre or aphex twin,

is a refreshing change from being forced to listen to "radio friendly unit shifters" (i enjoy that term).

when ever you turn on the radio/tv and music is playing, when ever you go to a pub/bar/club,

when ever you go into a shopping centre, when ever you have to work, depending on your job

(working as a labourer there's usually always a radio on somewhere, and there's many other jobs when you cant escape the music).

i try my best to isolate myself from music i dislike, i dont watch tv or listen to the radio and i rarely go to pubs/clubs,

exactly for this reason, no matter how rarely i hear this music, as soon as i hear it,

it makes me very annoyed and angry, i literally have no tolerance for music i dislike, and as a result, i am an extremely negative person a lot of the time.

i was also reading the posts about ambience, it's a very diverse genre, and even within artists and albums of this genre is can be also very diverse (aphex twin - saw2)

it is of course possible that you wouldn't like ambience no matter what you heard, but you seem open minded so it would be a shame to write off the whole genre, which i'm not suggesting you're doing...

and as a question to ambient goers, is it wrong to use ambience? cause i use the term all the time instead of ambient music, it's just far easier, shorter and has two less syllables...

For me, Cichlisuite and Envane are the two standouts in your list... but all of the EPs you listed are pretty damn good.

omg you guys are so helpful. autechre rules and has such totally awesome fans. if i had a music shop voucher i would totally ask you guys what to buy.

I'll add in my vote for Envane (would have suggested Anvil Vapre over it, but better to grab it later with Tri Rep++). Envane should be a good first autechre listen I think!

Never listened to Cichlisuite but I can tell you that Envane is really really good.

So much faces of Ae are represented on it, whether it's "hip-hop" (Goz Quarter, or 902 Quarter, or the first track), or more "obscure" stuff (Latent Quarter) or whatever.

You will certainly like one of those tracks. Then you'll like the whole EP. Trust me.

It happens.

Every time

And I forgot to mention Draun Quarter which is awesome.
