Couldve been worse.

It's nearly as great as most of my posts so far! (I promise they'll get better soon)

Oh, and just to piss people off, the last 4 pages are now redundant as I have decided to spend a little more and buy an album.

It would be a bit rude of me to ask for recommendations after this, so i won't.

Heheh Good.

As told before and unlike Aphex or Squarepusher I think Autechre albums are best bought in chronological order. Though perhaps you could start with Amber.

Being an Autechre fan isn't the easiest job in the world, they make your ears work hard. I came to a juddering hault after LP5 and dismissed Untilted/Confield as a racket. Then a few weeks ago I saw the light and am now totaly obssessed with them. A track you hate will some day down the line become a track you love.

No band I know in the world has this weird capability like Autechre. Spooky.

Enjoy the journey.

The first AE album I heard was amber, and I didn't like it at first. It sounded very boring to me.

The second AE album I heard was EP7. I loved some tracks but others were boring.

Then I bought Untilted, and I loved every bit of it. Following that I loved and understood everything else by Autechre.

But no one in their right mind would recommend Untilted as an album to start on. I think this goes to show that it doesn't really matter where you start. Just keep listening and you'll probably grow to like it.

  • 4 weeks later...

So I got Envane. I am a litle iffy after the first listen. It will hopefully grow on me though....

Decided to get another album + ep to give Ae a fair chance though because I got free downloads of LCC from Untitled, Arch Carrier (Atolyth Remix) from last.fm and Altibzz. I really liked LCC and especiallly Arch Carrier (Atolyth Remix)...

So, the eps I'm considering are Anti, Ganz Graf and Move of Ten (all at reasonable prices, and I'm a sucker for digipak packaging)....

The albums I'm considering are Untitled, Draft 7.30, Incunabula, Tri Repetae (can you still get the ++ version, or is that our of print?) Amber, Chiastic Slide, Oversteps and Quaristice... Those were all $19.99

Which ep and album I get?

Also, I saw a listing for "Amber/Quaristice" on the same site for $22.99...were the two compiled in the same package? I couldn't find any information via google...

anti- ep and incunabula

Chiastic Slide is the most classic of their early LPs. However, Confield, Draft 7.30 and Quaristice all have great things about them. Doesn't matter so much the order you get the albums in so much as having heard all releases before the new album has come out, whether that's in a downloaded or purchased form.

it looks like it is out of print. you could probably get a used copy from amazon or elsewhere though.

Hmm. I might not get TR at this, as I'll probably want to spend more so I can get the ++ version....

Instead of being a smart arse I'll answer this properly.

I pretty much entirely disagree. Without the net, a lot of these artists would be unable to flourish, except with a local fan base. I would still be listening to green day as ke$ha on the radio. And the one record shop within 500km of me it wouldn't be stocking any of the artists I now like (and if they were, I wouldn't pay 3 times as much as I would from something like, say, amazon if I'd never heard it before).

Maybe the net has taken away a degree of discovering things for ones own, but it sure as heck has created a lot more oppurtunites ti discover.

I'm actually going to go against most here and suggest you start with Quaristice or Oversteps and work your way back from there. That or start with maybe LP5 or Chiastic Slide (around the middle). I wouldn't suggest starting with earlier albums (Incunabula, Amber, Tri Rep) or Untilted (which is actually my fav)

'that said, I'm sure we all started with different albums but we all ended up in pretty much the same place, so you probably can't go TOO wrong. Either you'll like them or you won't. And you don't have to force it. I remember giving autechre a few chances over the years and I didn't like them... it just took time before my mind was in the correct place to appreciate them.

yup, those two have been packaged together as a two-fer reissue. at that price it's a great deal! especially if you are otherwise considering spending $20 anyway on a single album.

The internet has totally destroyed the magic of discovering anything for oneself. You'd think the OP was in the market for a small island or something.

we don't care, it gives us a chance to reflect on and write about the mighty 'techre ...
