Not everyone hates it, and if zaphod and the Overlook constitute a consensus on anything then we are doomed as a species to be miserable about everything.

There's plenty of room to criticize Mad Men, and it's far from required viewing for me, but there are likable aspects to the show and you shouldn't think you're somehow deficient for liking it.

Still 1000x better than Walking Dead, but what isn't?

Pretty much anything on U.S. network TV is worse than the Walking Dead, and I don't think the Walking Dead is particularly good.

i still like the show, but i've stopped paying much attention to the characters and plot. like i said, i just see it as well-crafted ambiance.

Rubicon was slow and boring too but it left me wanting more. If someone doesn't jump out a window by mid-season break I am done with this show.

Man I'm still bitter about Rubicon being cancelled after one season. Give peace a chance AMC!

I sorta came in here to see if Mad Men was worth watching from the beginning. I know quite a few people who watch it an love it. But most in here seem to slate it

It's definitely worth watching from the beginning, the first few seasons are very strong imo. It's TV unlike anything else. Started to fall off a bit towards the end of Season 3 and hasn't been as good since.

lol, i don't feel deficient... i was just wondering why all the hate, all of a sudden. i do feel a bit like the guys who have been carrying the show (don, roger, lane) are a little deflated because they're just no longer as important, they're no longer the standard definition of cool, but for me that adds appeal.. it's just a different time now, though so close to what came before.

  • 2 weeks later...

the episode where joanie's husband comes home was terrible. i think i fast-forwarded a couple of times when it was just getting cringeworthy and boring.

i think mad men has lost its spark D:

I felt like that episode was just meant to set up the whole Roger/Joan/babby future plot.

I thought last nights episode was really good. We got an interesting look at Pete as he starts becoming what Don used to be/going on a downward spiral/dealing with his realization that doing better in the company won't change his life and make him happy.

Don is definitely now a changed man, not sure if it will stick though.

Roger was feeling useless but has realized he still has an important place in the company.

And we're learning more about Lane in general.

Not every episode has to have Don cheating on his wife and getting drunk all day. People/times/situations change. It's how they deal with it that's interesting imo.

well put haut.

the show has definitely lost its spark though, at least for me, and in large part to the long hiatus. they took too long in between seasons and the show has become more like the middle seasons of sopranos where it was just dialog for the sake of dialog yet the writing for mad men is average at best.

this episode was the best so far but we are almost 6 hours into the season and it took a fist fight so that isn't saying much.

I'm only caught up to the first episode of the current season (5). So far, all I know about is this...

I also have a neighbor named Lane who looks just like the character in the show, tormenting me further.

complaing about madmen being slow or nothing happening is silly. nothing really ever happened. its a subtle show. i have found that watching week to week doesn't satiusfy in the same as flying through a season back to back. otherwise i think this season is as good as any other season.

the lane/pete fight was awesome this week

I thought this was the worst show of the season. It was spectacular, for sure. And high school ponytails.

But the writing -- the 'stagey' name-forgetting slips ('When are you and ... -- you two ..."), Pete's implausible (however failed) 'dalliance' with the student, the fistfight itself (where did that come from?), 'Handsome' ... it all just seemed too ... 'written'?

Don't get me wrong: I still loved the episode and I love Mad Men. I just thought this particular episode didn't feel as 'natural' as many of the others.

I personally enjoy the show 1000x more when the writers aren't afraid to actually write something. I loved this episode and I think it will remain one of my favorites of any season. Any attempts at the school of naturalism in Mad Men tends to result in a horribly boring 60 minutes.

yeah, this episode was highly entertaining. and things like the fight or pete's lusting after the high-schooler were not at all implausible if you consider the episode as a distillation of events that could have happened, instead of an actual one or two day period in these people's lives. that's the nature of drama, we leave out the boring same-samey stretches. '

as far as i'm concerned, this fifth season has been the strongest since the first two for mad men. great stuff!
