Charles Mingus. It isn't just that he's a phenomenal player or the fact that his composition's were boss, but he had a way of making all his groups sound so, so right. His ability to assemble these obscure players and got them to play in just the right way is astounding. I don't think there are a lot of artists who've gotten other musicians to express a vision so masterfully. I defy you to find a Mingus track that doesn't groove like crazy.

 mingus is the best! read beneath the underdog if you ever get around to it...oh and turn the fuckin mic on!

I went through a phase a couple years ago wherein I tried to read/watch everything about Mingus I could. That clip is great, although the documentary it's featured in is mostly shit.

You may have seen it, but here's my favorite writing of his:

havent seen the full doc but thanks for the heads up to avoid it. the cat toilet training article is great...this holiday season I wanna try his recipe for egg nog...sounds incredible but challenging

Dude also wrote a guide on how to toilet train cats and owned a cat named Nightlife.

for me, anyway. I struggle to describe exactly what it is about them that makes their music so special, but I just can't even judge it on the same level as other music.

God, that sounds wanky. I love Idlewild and Underworld and they come in second and third.

Is prince actually that good? I never gave him a listen because he was before my time and his sense of style just turned me off.

Definitely, or at least up until The Batman soundtrack IMO (which was where I switched off). The man is clearly a genius in the true sense of the word. And if you only ever check out one Prince song, then make it 'Erotic City'.

When I first took an interest in Prince I assumed that Erotic City was an old album track tacked onto 'Let's Go Crazy'. How that could be only released as a b-side I'll never know. And yeah, fucking 'Housequake', amazing track right there. It could easily stretch to 15 or 20 minutes and it wouldn't be tiring.

super super recommended are the bootlegs from the afterparties he played in clubs on the sign o the times tour

there's a legendary one from the paradiso in amsterdam where he does exactly that.

he also just loses it during another jam and tears the django jazz standard 'caravan' a new asshole.

prince at his most crying on/wailing on/fucking his guitar. it's actually kinda frightening.

Smashing Pumpkins. mainly before 2000. definitely not the reformed wank version.

Definitely! Billy Corgan was on a roll for so long. Probably one of my top three favorite bands.
