Me too, but I was wondering if there was a certain depth where it is most common? I want to make an iron mine and then a separate diamond mine if needs be

it's not really predictable enough to do that

coal ore can be found up to layer 127 (number of blocks above the void, which is under the lowest bedrock layer), iron ore can be found up to layer 64, gold ore can be found up to layer 32, and diamond ore can be found up to layer 16.

nice one, cheers. so basically I should just make a massive mine across all levels (up to 64). I don't think hunting for caves is the most efficient method.

It's like Minecraft is exposing all the potential in video games that has been unexploited all this time.

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

hmmm, notch just announced he's more or less finished implementing portals in his dev copy. his eventual intention is you'll be able to portal between different multiplayer servers, which is extremely awesome.

I can't bring myself to play this on anything other than peaceful for more than an in-game night. The monsters are just so irritating. They aren't fun at all to kill and you essentially get totally raped if you need to go get something outside at night time.

If the combat was remotely interesting then it would be a different story but I feel like this game works a lot better without zombies trying to kill you every 6 seconds. Same goes with exploring the cave depths. Every time I put enemies on, I regret it fairly quickly afterwards when I waste a shitload of steel making armor and then get blown up somewhere that I can't find my way back to.

If peaceful mode ever gets removed, I think I would stop playing.

noob

i'm essentially playing in creative at present; peaceful and an inventory editor, cos i'm trying to make a dwelling that's almost completely integrated into the landscape.

I'm kinda kinda tempted with this, but I has a couple of questions -

If you cock up your world (like that guy who caught fire to the house posted here a while back) is that it, it's burnt for good - Or can you save backups on the way ?

If you die, again is that it - Do you re-spawn into a different world or your world but with everything reset, or is death pretty much meaningless ?

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

you can back up your save (copy your save state)

and when you die you recover to the same set spawn, same world.

is there a way to set your spawn point in single player?

yes, using external editors

one of the nice things about minecrafts crazy savegame system is that it's very easily understandable by external progs cos it's very basic.

if you fall into lava, all your shit is gone (make a box with lava in it, handy trashcan)

if you fall anywhere else or drown, your shit drops to the ground and you can pick it up again

BUT if you drop shit it seems to disappear after a while (haven't timed how long)

bear in mind it's still ALPHA. i loaded the save with the perpetual motion machine a while ago and the minecarts had disappeared. don't get too attached to ANYTHING at this point, back up frequently etc.

I haven't timed it either but it disappears pretty quickly. I usually get killed in my mines and by the time I find my way back my stuff is gone (I've even had it disappear in front of my eyes)

that's not due to it being in alpha, you exceeded the mine cart's max velocity so it bugs out. Or so I hear. Personally I wish it weren't so easy to hack minecraft. I like the challenge of playing the game according to the rules and it feels dumb to have to qualify everything I make with "I did this in default minecraft, survival mode, no hacks or scripts"

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

if you want to build overground mega-structures with no hax, i find a good strategy is to first make a house near to your spawn, then:

1. explore for a decent amount of time

2. make a chest and stick all your shit in it except 64 [mud|gravel|sand|rock] and 4 torches

3. make a pillar extremely high and stick the 4 torches on the sides

4. jump off and die

5. respawn and follow the torch

6. realise you're an aspie and weep silently for a while

7. repeat

the beginnings of my 'do no harm' project...

bottom-right is the spawn-point; the cliffside is partially hollowed out, and there's a big tunnel (in red). the scale is pretty big; it takes me a couple of minutes to get from one end of the tunnel to the other, walking. there a few other places where the tunnel surfaces so far, which i haven't marked.

the stone circle is built around a natural depression in the ground. the tower at the top-left is up to max_height minus a couple of blocks. it's very much WIP but i'm diggin the concept.

edit: and minecraft is the purest example of emergent gameplay since the sentinel, as well as being one the purest fusions of art, science, and game i've ever seen.
