Its think its a wider problem than the word chav, modern comedy is mostly about bashing the uneducated and cultureless working classes and dole scroungers seem to be easy targets for raising peoples sense of self, as if so poor bastard taking £30 a week is crippling the country. I skimmed through parts of this thread as I couldn't be arsed, but I disagree with some of what (I think) you're getting at (I've always respected your opinions on here, by the way). I take great pleasure in looking at Chavs as cunts. I grew up on a council estate and I'm proud of it, and my folks still live there. I'd never knock anyone from the working classes and have never and never will look down on them. Chavs to my mind are the new generation of ignorant cunt who simply make places like those where I grew up worse to live in, worse for people like my folks who grew up skint and raised me pretty much skint but have stayed honest and decent nonetheless. This thread sort of proves my point, Wayne Rooney or Daniella Westbooke dont stand round corners drinking white lightening tooled up with screwdrivers. While the nigger coment was flippant, the point of it was that popular use of words has a way of warping its meaning. I spent my formitive years dodging cudgel swinging scum (i lived on a housing estate and had a mohican), but the word as kakapo said has been misappropriated as meaning a lack of culture and education. I just feel that the working class are getting from all directions recently, mostly from snearing liberals who would tell you that they dont exist anymore and its just the vulgar ones that they have a problem with. In my experience most of the working classes love a bit of vulgar, from singing Hey Baby at football matches, line dancing or a bit of Cracking Rose at a social club dinner dance. My vulgar hangover is happy hardcore or gabber, which is sadly lacking down south.

I think the implication is that they would be if they didn't do what they did.

Another way of looking at it is it's possible to be working class and charvy, but not working class and a charver. But I agree that there is something insidious going on with the portrayal of the working class. To an extent they're more difficult to stereotype, in part due to immigration as well as other socio-economic factors, like the north south divide becoming a little hazier, though that's about to go into reverse. So they pick a more identifiable stereotype from the underclass and apply that as a sneering blanket term for the working class downwards.

It does not refer to working class culture, especially what you are describing above. In fact it was a term coined and popularised by the people you're referring to above, i.e. the living for the weekend, working class flash male, in part to differentiate himself from an underclass of dole scroungers etc.

I think Wayne Rooney and Man Utd's statements may have beena clever way of rebuiling Rooney's confidence as it's clearly fucked.

Get Chelsea, Man City and Real Madrid all excited and lauding him up. Rooney's ego gets tickled, his agent gets more money when they eventually re-sign and I have a feeling that Rooney will be smashing the goals in again. Perhaps a strangely uninjured appearance at Stoke?

He said it was because of Man U not giving him assurances about future signings which was fair enough i thought. Don't forget Man U are in an obscene amount of debt. They didn't really use the Ronaldo money fully. Something has to change over there or they are in trouble.

Ive been too busy this week to take in any news or delight in the plight of manu, then when I get the chance its all over. Lets just hope hes made others(mostly Vidic and Nani) in the team doubt the ablity and spending power of their team and its the catalyst for the 20 years or so of obscurity.
