Remember that bassist who assumed he was better than Tom?

I actually think it's equally lol that people here are looking at squarepusher as the pinnacle of bass playing. Both of them are good, neither are near being the BEST.

I used to like Victor Wooten, when I was like 14 years old... after a while all the slapping and clicking noises get irritating, and you get over the fact that he can play really fast. He can groove like hell, though I wish he would choose to do that more, much too flashy for my tastes. Squarepusher, on the other hand, has chops for miles (not like Victor Wooten but then again Squarepusher's combination of bass skills and computer/software/sequencer/production skills probably equal or surpass Wooten) but he plays more tastefully and I'll take Squarepusher over Wooten any day.

Oh ok. Well I know quite a few people (all bass players) who literally idolize Victor Wooten and try to be just like him. Not kidding. So that's why I thought it wasn't a joke. It's like the guitarists who idolize John Petrucci or Yngwie Malmsteen. Same thing. My bad.

It's kind of hard to not call Victor Wooten the best. Especially after seeing him live.

I've seen Bela Fleck and the Flecktones live, and I actually really like Victor Wooten in that band. However, as a solo artist and a stand-alone bass player, not so much. Obviously he has great technical ability, but is the stuff he plays that musically pleasing? Take that youtube video for example, he plays really good grooves for like a minute, and then he goes into his hyperspeed slappy clicky stuff. It just gets annoying after awhile.

Hi all

Thanks for watching the video and providing feed back. Just a couple of things I would like to explain,

to psn.... I have kept the time loose, I felt like when it is perfect it sounds robotic, just a taste preference, I will make the 3rd video more precise.

mcbpete, yeah the hair is pretty stupid, believe me it is not a fashion statement, it is to stop it from getting in my eyes. I will loose it for next time.

Backson..... have we spoken prior to now? If you saw fastest 8 string player in the tags, thats not because I believe it, it is for exposure on youtube, I was not aware that those keywords were visible.

Lucy Faringold, sorry about the timing, the most recent video is not much better, I will make no.3 as close to perfect as I can, just for you.

Caretstik, what do you mean about my arm span?

thingfish, thanks for the input, do you have any of your old music I can listen to, I am curious now...

I have enjoyed all the feedback, feel free to comment on this video too.

Thanks

Finn

well that's a shitty excuse for playing out of time. The very idea of virtuosic playing and having technical skills in this respect means you have to play in time. It's not impressive unless you can control your fingers to perfectly subdivide. That's what actually takes skill. No one cares if you just twiddle your fingers on a bass to free yourself from the "robotic" metronome. If you'd start playing with a band you'd begin to realize that what once seemed "better than tom" is actually out of time and awkward.

edit: as for BEST bass player... jaco maybe?

I'll just leave this here. Wooten wishes he was this funky

This is something I can get behind. Certainly more than Victor Wooten. Jaco did it all - from horn like soloing on "Donna Lee" to straight up funk on "Come On, Come Over" to more atmospheric stuff on "Hejira" by Joni Mitchell to guitar like soloing on "Word of Mouth" to solo playing on "Portrait of Tracy" to more straight ahead accompaniment on "Three Views of a Secret"... I could go on and on. Truly one of the greatest musicians of all time.

chaosmachine, Thanks man.

lube sailbot, I know who square pusher is, where did you got the idea that I didn't.

fiznuthian, unreal video, he has some awesome skills.

Bubba69, I like that my music is being compared to the best, I would just like to point out that I never said, or implied i was the best.

tht tne, what do you mean "make go plastic"?

al5x, yeah man Victor Wooten is hard to play, defiantly the hardest stuff i have tried.

dr lopez, I can play in time, for the first 2 videos I made a stylistic decision not to, there will be a much more professional video in the new year. Why do you assume I don't play with a band? mad video btw.

lube sailboat, "anyone thinking you're better than squarepusher at the bass, make go plastic to back you up and then we'll talk "

does this sentence make any sense to you?

I had assumed he was speaking of the album go plastic, the album that followed selection sixteen.

I am dyslexic. I think it is funny that the only thing you can hold over me is a couple of grammatical errors.

you have made a fool of yourself.

oh yeah I'm sure i have. good wikipedia save dork. also good cop-out with the "I'm dyslexic" (especially given the balls of using it to excuse shit that doesn't qualify as dyslexia).

I have an aversion to pseudo-literate pseudo-talented twats exhibiting any form of pretension at all. I think it is funny that the only thing you can hold over me is that I am adamantly opposing the presence of dorks like you around here.

you have made a fool of yourself.

lol this is an awesome thread. top drawer stuff guys!!

So yeah finger tapping on the bass is about as exciting as finger tapping on the guitar.

while victor wooten is technically amazing, i find him to be a little lacking in real soul...he's damned talented though, no denying that.

Personally I really dig Vitous' playing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8rL5ML0fwU

and McBride:

and there are a bunch of other great bassists that never really get mentioned. Ron Carter, Niels Henning Orsted Pederson, Ray Brown, and for electric bass gods really besides Pastorius you want to hit up Patitucci.

And in the end, remember that its not a competition and all these players learned all the time and constantly strove to improve, and enjoyed jamming the shit out of their instruments.

백호야~~~항상에 사랑할거예요.나의 아들.

Shout outs to the saracens, musulmen and celestials.
