Tom would hold this kid over his knee and spank him like a bitch while he cried.

heh, to be fair I'd imagine he'd just offer words of encouragement. It takes fkn years of persistent practice to get to the kind of level that SP plays at, and it's the most rewarding thing when people give you encouragemtn and advice along that road.

I remember being a cocky as fuck 14 year old, shredding the hell out of my guitar and feeling smug in my ability to play SO DAMN FUCKING FAST!!! Fortunately grew out of it eventually. There's a bit in That film crouching tiger that really stuck with me. when Li mu bai tells the girl that first she must learn to hold the green destiny in absolute stillness. kinda same with an instrument IMO, learn to play one note so pure and perfectly, and go from there. Quality not quantity.

at The dude in the vids. It's great you've been playing for only 3 years. you've obviously got ability and that counts for a lot. you still got a long way to go though. you def need to work on your left hand technique, to be honest, your hammer ons are weak as hell. Really would recommend trying to build up your left hand strength some more. Your muting with BOTH hands is something you should also try and improve. There's a lot of ringing going on, you won't notice it so bad when you practice at home, but trust me, through a big amp at good volume, that kinda sloppiness really shows through.

Stick with it, as long as you get enjoyment from it, that's the best part of any kinda musical thing. Just be open to learning from people. the one thing I regret is having such an ego over my own playing that I was ignorant to the opinions and advice that other people had to offer. one day you'll see someone play who will completely destroy any confidence you have in your own ability, and then you'll start to learn :)

I'm with techdiff here, no point in hating. The guy obviously has talent and if he sticks with it he can become great, he is already good. I prefer a good riff over a 5 minute jazz solo though.

I used to see Brian Bromberg every year at a jazz festival when I was playing upright bass in school. Some of his stuff is meh, but he still is pretty darn good.

Victor Wooten is actually scheduled for this years jazz festival. Most of the artists host small clinics where you can pick their brain or if your brave enough jam with them a bit. Looking forward to checking it out.

1:30-1:48 is pretty great. i think you've got potential, and obviously put in a lot of work already. it's not as cohesive as it might be, but you're heading in the right direction.

I am finally back. here is the clip i have been working on, it is the single for the first Diminished Second album. Enjoy.

Seriously, get a metronome and practice with it always. You really need to tighten up your rhythm.

Something that struck me. You mentioned this being your "single" for your 1st album... Lemme get this straight... A SINGLE that consists of a solo electric bass? Good fucking luck with that.

Decent playing though I guess, although your timing is sloppy. You can retort by saying "Oh I'm just playing it loose", but it doesn't work so well man. Good luck.

@TechDiff thanks so much for the support, thinking about the 'Crouching Tiger' reference I will work on that for the next album, I will work on my left hand technique too, good catch.

Thanks impakt, are you into metal? or is that just a Norwegian stereotype? :-)

@chaosmachine, where do I loose the cohesion, any suggestions to tighten it up?

@soundwave good call, he inspired my fretless, its no hyperbass but it is a start

@sneaksta303, this is the single for the first solo bass album, I am not going to cop out with "Oh I'm just playing it loose" this is to a click and if you look at it to a grid it is almost perfect.

@ezkerraldean, thanks for the feedback, maybe one day.

For those of you who actually like, please check out my FaceBook page - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Diminished-Second/126022424126623. I've currently only got a small fan base and it would be great to get more support.

yeah it pretty much failed my click test. And while the entire thing might line up on simply a click eventually, that doesn't mean that it's in meter. :28-:31 was mighty squirrelly.

also. I'm pretty sure that video is sped up.

Here it is with a click, http://soundcloud.com/finn-baulch/tfm-w-click . It is not my fault you have no idea on music theory... it changes from 4/4 to 6/8 and back (the bmp drops by a third).

Why would I need to speed it up?

here is a sample of some metal stuff from 2 years ago that a friend and I wrote and tracked in a day. My new stuff puts it to shame, and this is heaps faster then what you accuse me of speeding up (check 35 sec if you cant be bothered to listen to it all, it is one of many highlights in this track). If I were to speed it up it would go out of tune (jam (if you can) along to it and check the tuning (it is in C maj))and if I were to use time compression expansion it would treat the octave strings as upper harmonics and they would go out of tune relative to the time shift over the fundamental.

I have an awesome mental picture of an un-educated internet troll trying to add a click to a master with no peak point of reference. :sup:
